  1. […] Wenyen Gabriel (2016) – His rapid improvement over the last year led to a breakout AAU season and it was more of the same here as he shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter, used his length to rebound, challenged shots at the rim, and scored over smaller defenders.  His stock is only likely to continue to rise as his frame fills out. 7. […] Wenyen Gabriel is a player Providence got in on early. The Friars were the first high major program to offer Gabriel a scholarship back in July 2014. Gabriel has been blowing up a bit of late, amassing 7 new offers in the last 3 weeks. Providence coaches followed Gabriel and the Mass Rivals around the weekend during the second live evaluation period of April while the Rivals played in Indianapolis as part of the Adidas Gauntlet series. Gabriel and the Rivals are 7-1 so far during Adidas Gauntlet series play and Gabriel has started 7 of the 8 games. He has averaged 10.1 points/game (68.5% FG), 5.4 rebounds/game and 1.6 blocks/game in 15.5 minutes/game. […]

  8. […] Wenyen Gabriel got a write-up from me earlier this week when looking at potential new priority recruits for Ed Cooley and his staff now that Temple Gibbs is off the board. Gabriel played at Wilbraham & Monson Academy last season and earned Honorable Mention for NEPSAC Class AA. WMA had a good season but fell to #1 seed Tilton in the Class AA semifinals. […]

  15. […] Wenyen Gabriel may have been the largest stock-riser in the class of 2016 this grassroots season. The 6’9 combo forward possesses an offer list that reads like a who’s who of college basketball elite. Then there is Providence and Ed Cooley. Cooley has been on Gabriel the longest of any high major school. Providence became Gabriel’s first high major offer back in July 2014. Gabriel’s only other offer at that time was from in-state New Hampshire. On Wednesday Gabriel cut his list down to a final 5 schools. That list is comprised of Duke, Kentucky, Maryland, Providence and UConn, according to a tweet from Adam Finkelstein. […]

  22. […] Wenyen Gabriel has sort of gotten lost in the shuffle of Providence recruiting talk over the last couple of weeks. Gabriel blew up this summer and received offers from some of the most blue blood programs in college basketball. He cut his list to a final 5 and included Providence but the Friars were the last of his 5 to have an official visit date set so Friar fans were not feeling optimistic, having been spurned by their top target before in previous recruiting years. Gabriel did set a visit date for an official visit to Providence on Wednesday and Friartown is abuzz with talk of what this means for their chances of landing the top 20 recruit. […]

  23. […] Wenyen Gabriel was one of the biggest risers in the rankings between last year and now and the Wilbraham & Monson forward recently set his official visit date for Providence for October 9th. Gabriel has taken a visit to Maryland and will see Kentucky next weekend. He then travels to UConn on October 2nd and trips to Duke the weekend after he will be in Friartown. Landing Gabriel would give Cooley a signature recruit who is currently ranked as a top 20 player in the class and could potentially be a McDonald’s All-American like Dunn was coming out of New London. 26. […] Wenyen Gabriel has announced his decision and the fast-rising forward from New Hampshire committed to John Calipari and the Kentucky Wildcats. Gabriel was down to a final 5 of Connecticut, Duke, Kentucky, Maryland and Providence and had taken visits to Maryland and Kentucky before shutting down his recruitment and announcing his commitment on ESPN’s Recruiting Nation with Adam Finkelstein. Gabriel — who attends Wilbraham and Monson Academy and ran with the Mass Rivals on the adidas Gauntlet series — was a top target for Ed Cooley and the Providence staff but, as was the case with the class of 2015’s top Friar recruiting target Donovan Mitchell, Gabriel blew-up in the spring and summer to rise all the way to the top 20 in the class of 2016 rankings, according to 247sports.com’s composite national rankings.
