Recap

  • Providence started 3 freshmen for the second straight game with David Duke, A.J. Reeves and Jimmy Nichols getting the call alongside juniors Alpha Diallo and Kalif Young. The Friars and Gaels started the game off going back and forth with the Friars making shots but turning the ball over and Iona getting inside and scoring in bunches in the paint. The Friars used a 7-0 run starting just under the 10 minute mark of the first half to create some separation, but Iona kept things tight. Maliek White came off the bench to provide a spark on the offensive end, as well as taking a charge on the defensive side of the ball. White played 11 minutes in the first half. He finished with 6 points on a pair of 3-point makes and dished the rock 3 times. Emmitt Holt also saw some time in the first half, making  pair of free throws and giving some solid minutes on the defensive end. Providence led by as many as 19 in the first 20 minutes of action and they held Iona to just 3/10 from beyond the arc.
  • The second half was more of the same for the Friars as they went on another 7-0 run to extend their lead to 21 points on a Kalif Young putback slam. Iona chipped away a bit, but the Friars didn’t allow their lead to dwindle too much. The Gaels would only get as close as 9 before an ill-advised technical foul by Rickey McGill allowed Providence to pull back away. Nate Watson was very good in the second half for Providence. The sophomore big man scored 12 of his 13 points in the second stanza and he was an impressive 6/6 at the free throw line.
  • Ed Cooley now has 148 wins as the Providence head coach. Cooley passed Al McClellan (147-65) and is now the 4th most winningest head coach in Providence history behind Joe Mullaney (319-164), Dave Gavitt (209-84) and Tim Welsh (160-143). Cooley’s record at Providence is now 148-96 and his overall record as a head coach is 240-165.
  • Diallo led Providence with 23 points on 8/15 shooting. He also added 9 rebounds. Reeves scored 20 on 8/12 shooting and Watson and Jackson added 13 points a piece.
  • Providence got 36 points from their bench and scored 25 points off turnovers.
  • Iona was led by E.J. Crawford with 21 points on 8/18 from the field.
  • The Friars will play Fairleigh Dickinson at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Tuesday for their 2nd game of this current 3-game home stand. That game tips at 8:30pm and will air on FS1.
