Friar Friday News & Notes: Big East Media Day Edition

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including coverage from Big East Media Day, the return of the PC/UConn rivalry, a shout out to Ed Cooley from Kenpom  and more.

Big East Media Day Coverage

Big East Media Day was once again held on the floor at Madison Square Garden for the second year in a row. The league would love to do it every year, but it’s dependent on the other MSG tenants’ schedules, namely the Knicks and Rangers. Kalif Young was supposed to be the fourth Friar player in attendance, but he remains sidelined by headache issues. The quick recap is that Providence was picked 4th in the preseason poll and Kyron Cartwright and Rodney Bullock were named to the preseason Second Team All-Big East.

USA Today 2017-18 Preseason Coaches Poll Released

USA Today released their preseason Coaches Poll on Thursday and Providence was among the group of schools who received some votes but not enough to crack the Top 25. The Friars got 21 votes and are ranked 32nd by the 32 head coaches across Division I college basketball who cast ballots. The Big East has 3 schools inside the Top 25, including league favorite Villanova who is ranked 6th. The Friars’ first opponent at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center as part of the Gavitt Tipoff Games is Minnesota who is ranked 15th and Providence’s in-state rival finds themselves one spot in front of the Friars 22 days before the 2017-18 season kicks off across the country.

Here’s how the Big East and Providence’s non-conference opponents fared in this preseason poll:

Providence’s Kyron Cartwright Named to Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award Watch List

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame released 20 names of players on the preseason watch list for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. Kyron Cartwright averaged 11.4 points/game, 4.4 assists/game and 2.4 rebounds/game in 33 games last season while improving his 3-point shooting from 12.1% as a freshman to 38.8% as a junior. Cartwright becomes the second point guard coached by Ed Cooley at Providence to be named to the preseason watch list for this award. Kris Dunn was named to the watch list in both 2014 and 2016. Dunn made it to the top 10 for the award in 2016 before not making the list of 5 finalists. Joining Cartwright on the 2018 watch list is fellow Big East competitor Jalen Brunson.
