Monday Friar Mailbag: David Duke Recruitment, 2017-18 Lineups & More

Each Monday I’ll do my best to answer some of your questions. The below are actual e-mails and tweets from readers. In some cases I have cleaned up the questions for grammar and clarity.

I got lots of questions about Providence native and top 2018 recruiting target David Duke. Let’s start there…

Tim C. asks:

Updates on David Duke? When should we expect a decision? Are the Friars still the front runners after he scheduled official visits to Florida and Virginia Tech?

Friar Friday News & Notes, Including Providence Coaches on the Recruiting Trail

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including Providence’s recruiting efforts, Jon Rothstein’s annual practice visit, a fun segment with Ed Cooley on Big East Shootaround, and more.

Recruiting Never Stops

Recruiting never stops and that’s certainly true when the NCAA recruiting calendar turns from “Quiet Period” to “Recruiting Period”, which happened on September 9th. The Friar staff — the full staff of Ed Cooley, Jeff Battle, Brian Blaney and Ivan Thomas — was spotted at Cushing Academy that first day to see prized 2018 recruit David Duke. The Friar staff subsequently completed an in-home visit with Duke and his family. Duke’s recruitment is one that has Friar fans on the edge of their seat. He’s not only a local kid from Providence, but he reminds many of former Friar and current Chicago Bull Kris Dunn. Duke is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida next weekend, followed by an official visit to Virginia Tech where his good friend and former Cushing roommate Wabissa Bede is a freshman.

Friar Friday News & Notes Including More on the Jimmy Nichols Commitment

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, which included a 2018 commitment.

Nichols Picks Providence

It traditionally doesn’t bode well for Providence in a recruitment when a player decides to announce his commitment at a big ceremony or on TV. So, when it was announced that 2018 Jimmy Nichols, who had just returned from an official visit to Friartown over the weekend, would end his recruitment by announcing his choice live on TV there were more than a few among the Friar Faithful that were skeptical of Providence’s chances, especially when Nichols’ hometown school was in the mix. But, alas, the TV announcement wasn’t on ESPN and Nichols didn’t do any pomp or circumstance. The Conway, SC native matter-of-factly announced that he would be playing his college ball at Providence College.

Providence 2017-18 Roster Rundown

Providence dropped their updated roster for the 2017-18 season over the weekend. The Friars added four new names and four names from 2016-17 are gone. Some players grew in height and/or weight, while one player shrunk an inch. No returning players changed their number. Here’s the 2017-18 Providence Friars roster as of June 5, 2017:

The Other Shoe Dropped Against USC, Future Remains Bright in Friartown

Obviously the result of this game wasn’t what Providence fans wanted. The 15 point halftime lead never truly felt comfortable. That’s a product of watching plenty of Providence games over the years that has fans always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Usually that other shoe is a player transferring or an injury or a coach leaving that cripples the program in the short term and sometimes even the long term.
