Recap
- Neither team came out firing in the first half on the offensive end. The two teams combined for 22/57 from the field in the game’s first 20 minutes and Creighton took a 3 point lead, 34-31, into the locker room behind 9 points from Mitch Ballock and 8 points from Martin Krampelj. Alpha Diallo led the way for the Friars with 8 points and Maliek White added 6 points. 6 of Diallo’s 8 points came from the free throw line and David Duke, Kalif Young and Nate Watson all were whistled for 2 fouls a piece.
- The second half saw Creighton wake up from behind the 3-point line. After making just 4/14 from beyond the arc in the first half. the Bluejays got hot and made 9 of their first 13 attempts in the second half to pull ahead to an 9-point lead. Duke fouled Davion Mintz while the junior guard was attempting a 3-pointer and MIntz made 2/3 free throws to stretch Creighton’s lead to 11 with 5:21 to go. Providence just never had enough offense to compete with Creighton once the Bluejays got in gear.
- Providence was led by Diallo with 18 points 10 rebounds for his 11th double-double of his career. Other Providence players in double figures were White with 13, Duke with 11 and Makai Ashton-Langford added 10 points.
- Creighton was led by Ty-Shon Alexander with 18 points. Krampelj had 16 points, Ballock had 17 points and Marcus Zegarowski added 12 points.
- Creighton shot 9/15 from 3-point range in the second half and shot 52% from the field overall in the second 20 minutes.
- The Friars welcome the defending national champion Villanova Wildcats to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Saturday. That game tips at 2:00pm and will air on FOX/FS1.
