Annual Big East Summer Meeting Held This Week

The Big East Annual Summer Meeting wrapped up this week in Ponte Vedra, FL after a parade of Athletic Directors, Senior Administrators, basketball coaches and TV executives held various gatherings to discuss the first 5 years of the league in it’s current configuration while planning for the future. A release sent out by the league mentioned appearances by Dan Gavitt, NCAA Senior Vice President for Basketball, Jim Haney, Executive Director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, Larry Jones, Fox Sports Executive Vice President and Joel Fisher, Executive Vice President of Marquee Events and Operations at Madison Square Garden.

Topics covered ranged from the report released last month by the Commission on College Basketball, plans for Big East basketball television presentation, including continuing with the Mic’d up game that featured Providence’s Ed Cooley and DePaul’s Dave Leitao wearing live microphones during the broadcast of last season’s game in Chicago and the continuing relationship with Madison Square Garden and the Big East Tournament. This season’s event, the 36th league tournament held at MSG, featured 3 sellouts of the 5 sessions. Also on the basketball agenda were the issues of transfers, scheduling and the officiating alliance the Big East shares with the ACC and seven other leagues.

Providence announced a home-and-home series this week with Texas, which came about a week after Iowa State’s Athletic Director, Jamie Pollard, was quoted as saying the Big East and Big 12 have discussed a scheduling alliance to counteract the potential for more leagues going from an 18-game conference slate to a 20-game conference slate that would potentially eliminate two chances for each of schools in those leagues to schedule non-conference games.
