Friar Friday News & Notes Including More on the Jimmy Nichols Commitment

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, which included a 2018 commitment.

Nichols Picks Providence

It traditionally doesn’t bode well for Providence in a recruitment when a player decides to announce his commitment at a big ceremony or on TV. So, when it was announced that 2018 Jimmy Nichols, who had just returned from an official visit to Friartown over the weekend, would end his recruitment by announcing his choice live on TV there were more than a few among the Friar Faithful that were skeptical of Providence’s chances, especially when Nichols’ hometown school was in the mix. But, alas, the TV announcement wasn’t on ESPN and Nichols didn’t do any pomp or circumstance. The Conway, SC native matter-of-factly announced that he would be playing his college ball at Providence College.

Providence to Play Washington in 2017 2K Classic in November

The matchups for the bracketed portion of the 2017 2K Classic were announced via a release on Monday with Providence facing off against Washington and Virginia Tech and Saint Louis filling out the other half of the bracket. The Friars will also play Houston Baptist and Belmont in the campus site portion of the 2K Classic with the Houston Baptist game opening Providence’s season on campus at Alumni Hall due to a scheduling conflict at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. The Friars game against Washington will be the later game at Madison Square Garden on November 16th. The Virginia Tech/Saint Louis game tips at 7pm. Both games will be on ESPN2 that night.

Providence’s Campus Site Matchups for 2017 2K Classic Announced

Providence will open their 2017-18 season against Houston Baptist on November 10th as part of the campus site portion of the 2017 2K Classic, per a release. The Friars will also face Belmont on November 22nd at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center as part of this event that will benefit Wounded Warrior Project. Providence is joined by Saint Louis, Virginia Tech and Washington as the four headline teams that will face-off at Madison Square Garden on November 16th and 17th in the Championship Round. Those matchups have yet to be announced.

Annual Big East Meetings Underway in Florida

The Big East conference is holding their annual offseason meetings in Ponte Vedra, FL this week. The meetings will be lead by Big East commissioner Val Ackerman and will include “planning sessions with the ten-member school’s athletic directors, senior woman administrators, and men’s and women’s basketball head coaches,” according to a release sent out by the league. Big East TV Schedule Announced for March 4th

The Big East announced the TV network schedule for the final Saturday of action on March 4th during the league’s media call on Thursday. When the season schedule was initially announced the network placement of these final 5 league contests were left up in the air between FOX and FS2. All 10 Big East teams are in action on the final day of the regular season and here is where you can watch your team play:


  • 12:00pm – Villanova at Georgetown
  • 2:30pm – Seton Hall at Butler


  • 12:00pm – Providence at St. John’s
  • 2:30pm – Creighton at Marquette


  • 2:00pm – Xavier at DePaul

Big East Launches Official Mobile App Offering Enhanced Coverage of Men’s Basketball Tournament


Mobile App Provides Enriched Coverage of Tournament Action for the 

Nation’s Premier College Basketball Conference 

New York – March 6, 2015 – The BIG EAST has launched an official mobile app that will showcase the 2015 Men’s Basketball Tournament by creating a completely unique second-screen experience for both the fan inside Madison Square Garden and the fan following all the hard-nosed action on FOX Sports 1.  The app pulls together real-time BIG EAST news, videos, scores, replays and bracket updates to provide fans with a comprehensive digital guide to the entire week of exciting college basketball action.

The app is free to download and available on both iOS and Android devices.

The official 2015 BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Tournament App will include a rapid replays in-venue feature that allows fans at MSG to re-live all the clutch shots, high-flying dunks and big-time blocks immediately after they happen.  The mobile replay system taps into the multiple camera feeds used throughout the arena to provide four angles of review, in fans’ hands, for all of the tournament’s most memorable moments.

A unique trivia-based Fan Challenge will also be featured within the app to test the knowledge of even the most die-hard BIG EAST basketball fans.  During each game of the tournament, a new set of four trivia questions will be unveiled to fans as they try to claim bragging rights as the BIG EAST’s Biggest Fan by the end of championship week.

“The BIG EAST Basketball tournament is one of the most sought after experiences in sports. We are excited to offer our fans a highly customized mobile app that brings fans closer to the action whether they’re watching at Madison Square Garden or at-home through a FOX Sportsbroadcast,” said Chief Marketing Officer Ann Wells Crandall.

The app incorporates a comprehensive list of features set to enrich the overall tournament experience. Fans can follow along throughout with an up-to-the-minute news feed, a YouTube video library complete with highlights, press conferences, interviews and recaps, real-time schedule and bracket features, complete team rosters, a social media suite, tournament photo gallery, a mascot directory and FOX Sports 1 and FOX Sports GO broadcast information.

A live radio feed of the game call from Westwood One, the official national radio partner of the BIG EAST, will also be accessible through the app.  Tournament tickets and official championship merchandise for the BIG EAST Tournament can also be purchased in the mobile app. 

The Conference developed the app in collaboration with YinzCam, Inc., the leader in mobile sports experiences and provider of more than 90 mobile applications for professional sports teams, colleges, and venues worldwide, including Madison Square Garden.
