Dunn, Henton Lead Providence Victory over Miami in Brooklyn

Kris Dunn continued his fantastic play in Brooklyn as he looks more and more like the McDonald’s All-American that he was coming out of New London. Dunn looked at ease on this NBA floor and finished the game with 15 points, 13 assists and 5 rebounds.

Joining Dunn in continuing the good play was LaDontae Henton who came alive in the second half and finished the game as the high scorer with 25 points while adding 5 rebounds. Two ACC transfers also had good games as Carson Desrosiers was solid down low with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Tyler Harris came off the bench for the second straight game and he played well getting a couple of quick buckets in the first half and then playing a good portion of the second half minutes, finishing the game with 13 points.

Providence was able to keep Miami’s shooters at bay just long enough as the Hurricanes were led by Angel Rodriguez’s 19 points with Sheldon McClellan getting hot for a stretch in the second half and finishing the game with 17 points.

The crowd was decidedly pro-Providence and the in-game management was nothing like last season when it felt like the Barclays Center was producing the game like it was Rupp Arena.

The Friars were in control of this 76-62 win for most of the second half. Cooley credited the team’s leadership and opening the second half with an 8-0 run. “Coming right out of the gate [of the second half] I thought our leadership did a really good job. We set the tone with an 8-0 run and I think that was the game. If you don’t have that 8-0 run I think the game is closer at the end,” Cooley said after the game.

Providence finishes the non-conference portion of their schedule 10-3 and now will have 8 days to prepare for their Big East opener against the Creighton Blue Jays in a rematch of the Big East Championship game as part of the Big East’s New Years Eve marathon.

“We’re thinking about all conference play now,” Cooley said. “This is a weekend that we talked about playing UMass and Miami back-to-back [and] we thought would be two critical resume games if we were fortunate enough to advance and win hopefully come March and we’re able to win some games in the brutal, brutal Big East as teams are playing well we’ll find ourselves hopefully playing in March with a win like today.”
