Providence Grabs Point Guard in 2016

Ed Cooley and the Friar coaching staff have been trying to reel in a point guard for the last few recruiting cycles. Kyron Cartwright is the only true point guard currently on the roster with Drew Edwards and Tyree Chambers being thought of as more combo guards. Cooley was able to add to that group on Sunday with the addition of Richmond, VA native Maliek White. White visited Providence over the weekend after canceling his trip to Cincinnati.

White visited Pittsburgh last weekend and there was some consideration that he may join recent Panther commit Justice Kitchart in the backcourt there but the River City Reign lead man has committed to Cooley and the Friars. The Friars are getting a guard that is capable of scoring the ball while also distributing when necessary. White is a proven winner as he led his George Wythe HS squad to the state title last season — the first in the schoool’s history in that sport.

He cut his list down on Saturday to a final four of Georgia Tech, Providence, Old Dominion and Pittsburgh. Evidently White felt that Friartown was the place for him. He told BigEastCoastBias.com that he sees himself “fitting right into the Friars’ system.”

This leaves the Friars with a need in the frontcourt but they are now able to feel comfortable with Kris Dunn most likely leaving after this season for the NBA Draft. The Shamore Ponds recruitment may now not be as dramatic for Cooley and the Friars as they have landed a very good guard recruit in the class of 2016. Cooley is still in the mix for big men Kevin Marfo — who visited this weekend along with White — and Sedee Keita.
