Friar Friday News & Notes, Including a God Shammgod Update

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including a God Shammgod update, Providence’s upcoming visitors, an updated Scout.com 2019 recruit rankings, and more.

God Signs an Extension

God Shammgod left Providence for a job in player development with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks last July. After a successful year in Dallas in which Shammgod has received credit for the improvement of Harrison Barnes, the Mavs locked up the former Friar with a 4-year contract extension. While Barnes’ improvement is noteworthy for the Mavs after they signed him to a 4-year, $94.4 million contract, what may be motivating the Mavericks to keep Shammgod around is Dennis Smith, Jr. Shammgod and Smith have a prior relationship from Smith’s high school days and he is expected to be the point guard of the future after being taken 9th overall in April’s NBA Draft.

Providence’s Culture of Winning Drives Recruiting Success

The Providence Friars have become a constant fixture in the NCAA Tournament. Ed Cooley has taken a program that hadn’t been to the Big Dance since 2004 to a school-record four straight NCAA Tournaments. He also has a roster that is poised for a fifth consecutive appearance in 2017-18, though college basketball betting odds offered by sportsbooks don’t appear too highly on the Friars’ chances of actually winning the whole damn thing. That’s where recruiting comes in.

Monday Friar Mailbag: David Duke Recruitment, 2017-18 Lineups & More

Each Monday I’ll do my best to answer some of your questions. The below are actual e-mails and tweets from readers. In some cases I have cleaned up the questions for grammar and clarity.

I got lots of questions about Providence native and top 2018 recruiting target David Duke. Let’s start there…

Tim C. asks:

Updates on David Duke? When should we expect a decision? Are the Friars still the front runners after he scheduled official visits to Florida and Virginia Tech?

Friar Friday News & Notes, Including Providence Coaches on the Recruiting Trail

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including Providence’s recruiting efforts, Jon Rothstein’s annual practice visit, a fun segment with Ed Cooley on Big East Shootaround, and more.

Recruiting Never Stops

Recruiting never stops and that’s certainly true when the NCAA recruiting calendar turns from “Quiet Period” to “Recruiting Period”, which happened on September 9th. The Friar staff — the full staff of Ed Cooley, Jeff Battle, Brian Blaney and Ivan Thomas — was spotted at Cushing Academy that first day to see prized 2018 recruit David Duke. The Friar staff subsequently completed an in-home visit with Duke and his family. Duke’s recruitment is one that has Friar fans on the edge of their seat. He’s not only a local kid from Providence, but he reminds many of former Friar and current Chicago Bull Kris Dunn. Duke is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida next weekend, followed by an official visit to Virginia Tech where his good friend and former Cushing roommate Wabissa Bede is a freshman.

Friar Friday News & Notes Including More on the Jimmy Nichols Commitment

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, which included a 2018 commitment.

Nichols Picks Providence

It traditionally doesn’t bode well for Providence in a recruitment when a player decides to announce his commitment at a big ceremony or on TV. So, when it was announced that 2018 Jimmy Nichols, who had just returned from an official visit to Friartown over the weekend, would end his recruitment by announcing his choice live on TV there were more than a few among the Friar Faithful that were skeptical of Providence’s chances, especially when Nichols’ hometown school was in the mix. But, alas, the TV announcement wasn’t on ESPN and Nichols didn’t do any pomp or circumstance. The Conway, SC native matter-of-factly announced that he would be playing his college ball at Providence College.

2018 Jimmy Nichols Commits to Providence Following Official Visit

Providence has added yet another versatile player to their 2018 recruiting class with the news that Conway, SC forward Jimmy Nichols has chosen Providence over Miami and South Carolina. Nichols announced his decision on WPDE-15, the local ABC affiliate in Myrtle Beach, Tuesday night after taking his official visit to Friartown September 1st through 3rd. The plan was for Nichols to visit South Carolina this upcoming weekend and then Miami at the end of the month, but Nichols apparently saw enough while on his visit to Providence that he shut down his recruitment and pledged to Ed Cooley. Nichols now makes three committed recruits for 2018 to go with AJ Reeves and Kris Monroe.

Friar Friday News & Notes with a Ben Bentil Update

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, which includes news about a former Friar, a pair of official visitors, new 2019 offers and more.

Ben Bentil Heading to France

Former Friar Ben Bentil, who has been working out and taking classes at Providence this Summer, is taking his talents to France this season. He signed with Chalons-Reims in the French Pro A league after playing just 3 games with the San Antonio Spurs between the Las Vegas and Salt Lake City NBA Summer Leagues. Bentil played 3 games last season in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks during a 10-day contract after he returned from a stint in China that included 11 games with Xinjiang Guanghui in which Bentil averaged 13.7 points/game and 4.8 rebounds/game. Bentil scored 19 points in his preseason debut with Chalons-Reims on Thursday against Brussels.
