Providence Lands Devin Vanterpool: FAU Breakout Guard Commits to the Friars

The Friars have landed versatile and highly sought after transfer portal addition in 6’4 scoring guard Devin Vanterpool from Florida Atlantic. The redshirt sophomore announced his commitment Tuesday night after visiting campus, choosing Providence over offers from Ohio State, Georgetown, Maryland and UCLA. Vanterpool gives Bryan Hodgson’s staff a proven two way perimeter threat who exploded into a top of the scouting report performer at FAU this past season which includes 22 points and 26 points in two games against Hodgson’s USF squad in the American conference season in 2025-26.

A native of Laurel, Maryland, Vanterpool grew up around the game as the son of longtime NBA assistant coach (and former pro player) David Vanterpool, currently on the Washington Wizards staff. He began his high school career at Wayzata High School in Minnesota before transferring to the legendary Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, NY. At Christ the King, Vanterpool earned two-time all-conference honors and was part of a state championship team. A consensus three-star recruit in the class of 2023, he wasn’t a national top-100 prospect but drew steady interest from mid-major programs (St. Bonaventure, LIU, Manhattan, Robert Morris and Siena). He committed to FAU in March 2023, drawn to Dusty May’s system shortly after the Owls’ magical Final Four run.

College Career Progression:

  • 2023-24 (Redshirt Freshman): Sat out the season after enrolling.
  • 2024-25 (True Freshman): Limited role off the bench (7.9 MPG, 2.0 PPG in 30 games) as the Owls reloaded.
  • 2025-26 (Sophomore): Full breakout. In 24 games (31.2 MPG before an ankle injury ended his season in mid-February), he averaged 15.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.5 steals, and 0.8 blocks. He earned AAC Most Improved Player honors and Third Team All-Conference recognition while leading FAU in scoring. aseaofblue.com

His growth was massive over his two seasons at FAU where he played. His usage rate jumped from 16.5% to 25.5%, while offensive rating skyrocketed from 91.9 to 114.4. He became the offense’s engine in a prominent role. Vanterpool wasn’t just putting up numbers. He was efficient and impactful on both ends:

  • Offense: 56.7% true shooting (59th percentile), 78.2% FT (70th percentile), 35.1% from three on nearly 50% of shots (63rd percentile), and elite mid-range at 46.2% (70th percentile). Balanced shot distribution with strong rim and mid-range creation.
  • Defense: Outstanding — 85th percentile DRAPM, 88th percentile adjusted defensive rating (100.0), 71st percentile steal rate, and 65th percentile defensive rebounding. He’s a plus defender who disrupts on-ball.
  • Overall Impact: PORPAG 3.40 (90th percentile), Above Average RAPM (2.9418, 85th percentile), BPM 3.91. His 78th percentile ORAPM shows he created efficiently in a high-usage role.

Vanterpool didn’t start playing structured basketball until eighth grade because his dad never pushed him, letting him choose the game. That grounded upbringing shows in how teammates and coaches describe him: a high-character, level-headed competitor who stays true to himself. One current college assistant that recruited Vanterpool out of high school told pcbb1917.com that Vanterpool is an “unreal human. Great kid.”
