Providence Departs for 10-Day Italy Trip

Providence will depart on their team trip to Italy on Tuesday evening from JFK International airport in New York after practicing for a final time state-side at Big East compatriot St. John’s facilities in Queens. The Friars will travel to Milan, Lake Como, Pesaro, Florence and Rome over the course of the 10-day trip — allowed by the NCAA every 4 years — before returning to Boston’s Logan airport on August 24th. In between the pasta and culture there will also be four games played (August 16th, August 18th, August 22nd and August 23rd).

Ed Cooley met with the media on Monday before the final men’s basketball practice in Alumni Hall — the team will move into the brand new Ruane Friar Development Center upon returning home from Italy — and told reporters that the veterans will play 2 of the 4 games while Cooley, who will delegate in-game coaching to his assistants while in Italy, wants to see the freshmen as much as possible. Cooley also said the plan is to play Emmitt Holt for 2 games to see where he’s at in his recovery from abdominal surgery that cost him all of the 2017-18 season. If you haven’t read Brendan McGair’s story on Holt with quotes from his mother, Caroline, I highly recommend it to get some perspective on just how serious Holt’s last year has been.

You can track Providence’s trip on the map below to see their journey. Keep your eyes and ears open for a possible podcast with a report from the ground in Italy from one of the boosters in attendance.
