Providence made official what has been speculated about for awhile now that Emmitt Holt is expected to miss the entire 2017-18 season and redshirt. The school’s release says that Holt “has taken a personal leave from the team this semester” and “will return to the team in January.” Holt has remained off campus recovering from abdominal surgery performed right around the start of the Fall semester.
“Emmitt is one of our team’s most consistent and experienced players, but more importantly, he is an outstanding person,” Ed Cooley said in the release. “We look forward to his return.”
While it’s good news that Holt plans to return to the team in January there’s no doubt that the Friars have missed him both on and off the court over the last few months. Holt was second on the team in scoring last season and was expected to be a key piece to the 2017-18 Friars team. The other aspect that can’t be overlooked is Holt’s impact as an infectious personality and a team leader.
Get well soon, Emmitt.

I’m confused. If Emmitt “plans to return to the team in Jan. 2018”, that means he won’t be missing the “entire 2017-2018 season” Which is it?
He’s returning to the team in the sense that he’ll be back in school and around the team but he will not play at all the remainder of the 2017-18 season. He will redshirt 2017-18 and then return in 2018-19 as a redshirt senior.
