Ben Bentil Named to Big East Weekly Honor Roll

Ben Bentil’s star has been on the rise since the Providence Friars went out West over Thanksgiving weekend. Since Bentil set a career-high with 24 points in Providence’s opening round win over Evansville in the Wooden Legacy Tournament on Thanksgiving night, the sophomore from Delaware — by way of Ghana — has been on a tear of 20 point scoring efforts. Bentil scored 21 points in Providence’s blowout win against Hartford on Tuesday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center and followed that up by notching a game-high 23 points, including the game-winning tip-in as time expired against in-state rival Rhode Island on Saturday night.

Some might say that kind of week would be good enough to garner Big East Player of the Week honors. I might even be in agreement with some on that. The league’s coaches didn’t quite see it that way as they awarded this week’s honor to Butler’s Kellen Dunham. Dunham also had the key scores in a 2-point win last week, but his were against a ranked team on the road, so perhaps more stock was placed there. Either way, Bentil was recognized by being named to this week’s Big East honor roll. Joining Bentil on the honor roll is Bradley Hayes (Georgetown), Luke Fischer (Marquette), Ryan Arcidiacono (Villanova) and Trevon Bluiett (Xavier). Eli Cain (DePaul) was the Big East Freshman of the Week.
