National Polls Update: Week 13

Providence went 1-1 this week with their home win against DePaul and then their road loss at St. John’s. Last week Providence got 13 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll and they are now getting 9 votes in that poll this week which ranks them 33rd. They were 33rd a week ago with those 13 votes. The Friars got 17 votes in the AP Poll last week which was good for 32nd. They have fallen out of favor with those writers and got just 3 votes this week which ranks them 36th.

The Big East

Villanova won their only game this week which was Saturday afternoon at DePaul. The Wildcats are now 19-2 on the season. Both polls ranked Villanova 7th last week and they are still 7th this week. The Wildcats remain the highest-ranked Big East team this season and the only that has been ranked in the top 5 at any point.

Last week the Georgetown Hoyas were 22nd in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 21st in the AP Poll. This week the Hoyas are 24th in both polls this week after losing at home to Xavier and beating Creighton on the road. The Hoyas next game is against Providence on Wednesday night.

Butler was 31st last week with 21 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Bulldogs were 25th in the AP Poll last week. After going 1-0 in game action with their win coming at Marquette in overtime on Saturday, Butler is 22nd in both polls this week.

Seton Hall received 10 votes in the AP poll last week and go none in the USA Today Coaches poll. Following a 2-0 week where the Pirates got back their star freshman Isaiah Whitehead from injury, Seton Hall is receiving 22 votes in the AP Poll and 7 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. That’s good for 27th in the AP poll and 35th in the Coaches poll.

Xavier returns to the ARV section of the AP poll after a 1-1 week that included a road win at Georgetown and a road loss at Seton Hall. The Musketeers got 8 votes in the AP poll which ranks them 33rd. This is the first time Xavier has received votes in the AP poll since week 9 (January 5th). They got no votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Big East has 3 teams in the top 25 for the second straight week. No other Big East teams are receiving votes in either poll.

Providence’s Non-Conference Opponents

Kentucky remains at the top of both polls in week 13 with their 21-0 record and they are now the only unbeaten team in college basketball after Virginia lost to Duke Saturday. The Wildcats took care of Missouri by 10 on the road in a game that wasn’t as close as the score might indicate and returned home to defeat Alabama by 15.

Notre Dame went 1-1 last week with the win coming at home against #4 Duke and the loss on the road at Pittsburgh. The Fighting Irish were 8th in both polls last week and are 10th this week.

Miami (FL) had a rough week after jumping back into the 23rd spot in both polls last week. The Hurricanes went 0-2 in ACC play with a 20 point home loss to Georgia Tech followed by a 1 point road loss at Florida State. Not surprisingly, the Hurricanes are out of the top 25 in both polls and no longer receiving any votes in either poll.

Rhode Island got 1 vote this week in the AP poll and that 1 vote was by Dave Borges of the New Haven Register. The Rams went 2-0 last week in Atlantic 10 play and are now 15-5 on the season, including 7-2 in the A10.
