National Polls Update: Week 9

Providence went 1-1 this week which was not good enough to garner any votes in week 9 which marks the 4th straight week that the Friars have gotten zero votes in either poll. The Friars have 2 games this week including a road game against Butler Tuesday night.  Going 2-0 this week at Butler and versus Georgetown at home would go a long way towards impressing voters for week 10 and beyond.

The Big East

Villanova dropped to 8th in the AP Poll and 8th in the USA Today Coaches Poll following a 1-1 start to conference play including a road loss at Seton Hall on Saturday. Last week Villanova was 6th in the AP Poll and the 5th spot in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Wildcats remain the highest-ranked Big East team this season. After moving up for two straight weeks in both polls St. John’s has now fallen following an 0-2 start to conference play. The Red Storm go from 15th in the AP Poll last week to 24th in that poll this week while they drop from 17th to 24th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.  Butler went from receiving a few votes in both polls in week 7 to no votes in week 8. Week 9 now has the Bulldogs ranked 28th in the AP Poll and 35th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Georgetown jumped into the 25th slot of the AP poll last week and were 27th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. In week 9 the Hoyas are 40th in the AP Poll and 27th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.

The biggest mover this week is Seton Hall who went from zero votes in the AP Poll and 31st in the USA Today Coaches poll last week to 19th in the AP Poll and 19th in the USA Today Coaches poll. The Pirates got out to a surprise 2-0 start including wins against ranked opponents in St. John’s and Villanova. Xavier got some votes this week in the AP Poll good for 44th. The Musketeers still got no love in the USA Today Coaches Poll though.

The Big East had 3 teams in the top 25 last week and continues to have 3 this week even though the 3rd team is now a different one than last week with Georgetown dropping out and Seton Hall jumping in. No other Big East teams are receiving votes in either poll.

Providence’s Non-Conference Opponents

Kentucky remains at the top of both polls in week 9 with their 13-0 record. Miami (FL) did not receive any votes again this week. Notre Dame was 14th last  week in the AP Poll and 16th in the USA Today Coaches Poll and the Fighting Irish moved up in both polls this week following wins over Hartford and Georgia Tech. Notre Dame takes on North Carolina in Chapel Hill Monday night for their first road test of the ACC schedule. The Fighting Irish are now 14th in the AP Poll and 12th in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
