Providence’s Drew Edwards to Miss Rest of Season, Apply for Medical Hardship Waiver

Providence head coach Ed Cooley has been asked consistently about the status of sophomore guard Drew Edwards over the last few weeks. The concept of shutting Edwards down and redshirting him was first brought up almost a month ago with Cooley deeming a medical redshirt “definitely a possibility.” Providence made it official today via a press release. In the release, Cooley said “xxx.”

Edwards played uneven minutes in 8 games through Providence’s first 12 contests of the season. He saw his first action in game 4 on November 21st with 15 minutes in a blowout win over St. Francis (NY). His season high in minutes came on December 10th when he was on the court for 19 minutes in a win over UMass in which he scored 5 points, grabbed 3 rebounds and had 2 steals. Edwards had offseason knee surgery to repair what was believed to be a fairly minor injury he played through most of his freshman season. The damage was more severe than expected and his recovery time went from 4-6 weeks to 3-4 months.

With only 8 games played on the season and none of them coming after the halfway point in Providence’s schedule, Edwards would appear to meet the minimum criteria of less than 30% of games. The tricky part is that deeming him not able to play is a bit more subjective since it was a previous injury that hasn’t healed well enough and not a new and tangible injury, as far as we know right now. Providence had success recently with the medical hardship waiver when former walk-on Ted Bancroft was given a year back in order to compete in the 2014-15 season as a graduate student.
