Markus Howard Kamar Baldwin FOY Facts

Butler guard Kamar Baldwin was named the Big East’s Freshman of the Year. Baldwin is the first Butler player to win this award, which was previously called “Rookie of the Year” from 1989 through 2015 season after starting out as “Freshman of the Year” from 1980-1984. Baldwin made plenty of clutch shots this season and finished league play fifth in scoring among freshman. He was also fourth in total rebounds and third in steals.

Marquette guard Markus Howard was named the Big East’s Freshman of the Year. Howard becomes the second straight player from Marquette to be named Freshman of the Year. Henry Ellenson, who was drafted by the Detroit Pistons in the 1st Round of the 2016 NBA Draft, was the award recipient last year. Howard led the Big East in 3-point percentage at a whopping 57.3% in league play. He shot 55.1% from beyond the arc for the season. Howard’s 57.3% shattered the previous Big East record of 52.4% previously held by Garrick Thomas of Pittsburgh in the 1995-96 season. Howard is the first freshman to lead the Big East in 3-point percentage since Scottie Reynolds. Dominic James (2006) is the other Marquette player to win this award.
