Providence to Host 2017 Daniel Mading for Official Visit

Providence has been mentioned with some 2017 guard prospects over the last couple of weeks and now the Friars are reportedly hosting a 2017 big man for an official visit this week. Just after 7pm on Monday night, Russ Wood of Rivals.com reported that Daniel Mading will take an official visit to Providence from February 1st through February 3rd. Wood also reported that Mading plans to take an official visit to Texas Tech from February 11th through February 13th.

Mading is a 6’9 native of Sudan and cousin of Milwaukee Buck Thon Maker. Mading came to the US from Australia in the summer of 2014 and originally enrolled at The Rock School in Gainesville, FL. He played out his sophomore year there and then moved on to St. Anthony to be coached by Bob Hurley, Sr. at the Jersey City, NJ basketball powerhouse. Mading committed to Hurley’s son, Bobby Hurley, and Arizona State in December 2015 before opting to re-open his recruitment this past June. At the time of his commitment, Mading was ranked 61st in the class of 2017 by Scout.com.

An NJSIAA age restriction forced Mading to move back to The Rock School for his senior season after he was not given a waiver. He turned 19 on August 20th and the cut-off for the NJSIAA is September 1st. Mading projects as a stretch-4 in college and he may even have the ability to play some on the wing. His Team Belief AAU coach and trainer Brandon Howell told Zagsblog.com that Mading’s “potential is scary.” Howell continued, “he’s long and athletic with length to disrupt opponents on the offensive end…[and] has improved his handles tremendously.”

With the way Providence is pursuing players in the class of 2017, it seems likely that a current scholarship player — besides Tom Planek — will not return next season because the Friars are currently full at 13 scholarships for 2017-18 after their two commitments by Dajour Dickens and Nate Watson. Planek is a former walk-on who was put on scholarship for the 2016-17 season but that scholarship currently doesn’t exist for him next season, at which time he would likely return to a walk-on role. Providence plays #4 Villanova on Wednesday night when Mading’s visit begins and the Friars have a bit of a break until their next game being a full week later at Seton Hall on February 8th. That should give the coaching staff plenty of time to spend with Mading until he leaves on February 3rd.
