National Polls Update: Week 6

Providence went 2-1 since the last release of the national polls on December 8th but that loss was to Brown at home. After the loss to Boston College on December 5th the Friars were only receiving 4 votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll and 0 votes in the AP Poll so it’s no real surprise that the Brown loss would be enough to stop all votes for Providence. The Friars only have 1 game this week which is on Saturday at home against UMass. A win there likely wouldn’t do much for their vote-getting appeal so I expect the Friars to be outside the national spotlight as they head to the Barclays Center on December 22nd to take on the 18th (AP)/19th (USA Today Coaches Poll) ranked Miami Hurricanes.

Providence’s Non-Conference Opponents

Kentucky remains at the top of both polls in week 6 with their 11-0 record. Future opponent Miami (FL) moved from 20th in the AP Poll and 21st in the USA Today Coaches Poll to 18th in the AP Poll and 19st in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Notre Dame cracked the 25th spot in the AP Poll last week and moved to 21st in that poll while jumping from 26th to 21st in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Fighting Irish had received 91 votes last week in that poll which was 13 behind 25th ranked Illinois. Yale got 1 vote for the AP Poll in week 5 but none in week 6.

The Big East

Villanova stayed at 7th in the both polls and remains the highest-ranked Big East team this season. Moving up in the AP Poll is St. John’s who went from 24th to 20th this week. The Johnnies were 27th in the USA Today Coaches Poll behind Notre Dame last week and moved up to 23rd this week in that poll. Butler slipped from 15th in the AP Poll to 23rd and 19th in the USA Today Coaches Poll to 25th. This marks the second straight week with 3 Big East teams ranked in the top 25.

Other Big East teams receiving votes this week are Georgetown (30th in AP Poll and 29th in USA Today Coaches Poll), Seton Hall (33rd in AP Poll and 32nd in USA Today Coaches Poll). Creighton was receiving votes in both polls last week placing them 37th but they are no longer receiving votes this week in either poll.
