The first July live evaluation period has arrived and the Providence coaching staff will be out and about stalking down talented future Friars all across the country over the next few days. A live evaluation period means college coaches are allowed to attend and evaluate recruits at certified events. This particular evaluation period begins on July 12th at 5pm and is active through 5pm on July 16th. To read about why the July live periods are so crucial for recruiting, check out this excellent article by Rob Dauster at College Basketball Talk. All three major shoe company circuits have their playoffs/finals during this first live period of July. Nike has their EYBL Peach Jam, adidas finishes off their Gaunlet series and Under Armour Association finals are also played over the next several days. All three of these events are conveniently located in a nice circle so the coaches can go back and forth between all three major events between now and Sunday.
As I traditionally do each spring and summer, I’ll be providing a guide for fans to follow along and see where Providence’s targets are playing during a given live evaluation period. This post will be updated as the weekend goes on and more information is known. The name of the assistant next to the player’s name indicates who the lead assistant is for that player and does not necessarily mean that coach will be at that event

This weekend kicks off the real recruiting season for members of the class of 2017 and beyond because starting on April 15th a live evaluation period officially begins. Providence landed their point guard in the class of 2016 that they had been searching for when Maliek White pledged to Ed Cooley and the Friars during his official visit over the weekend. Next on the agenda for Cooley and his staff is to address the needs in the frontcourt. Enter Sedee Keita. While Wenyen Gabriel is still a priority for Providence it’s Keita who is the only true big man with the size to be a real rim protector. Kevin Marfo took an official visit last weekend with White and would certainly bolster the Friar frontcourt in 2016-17 but he’s a few inches shorter than Keita and is seen as more of a pure power forward.

Providence coaches have begun to zero in on their top targets in the class of 2016 over these last few weeks. One of those players that has been given extra attention is 2016 PF Sedee Keita. Keita, who is now enrolled at Putnam Science Academy, has received at least two visits from the Providence staff since the recruiting period began on September 9th. On Monday night Keita cut his list down to a final six, according to Alex Kline. The cut-down list is made up of LSU, Penn State, Providence, South Carolina, Temple, UNLV. Keita confirmed the news via his Twitter account.

The recruiting buzz around the Providence program has been steadily picking up over the last few weeks as lists have been cut down and official visits scheduled. This weekend begins a massively important 30 day stretch for Ed Cooley and his staff as they will host 6 recruits and have their annual Late Night Madness. The visitors begin with a wing from the class of 2016 today and end with a slew of recruits at Late Night Madness on October 17th with some other high profile recruits coming to the campus in between.

The final live evaluation period of the summer is upon us and most of the attention turns to Las Vegas as many of Providence’s targets will be lacing it up in Sin City over the next few days. There is also a big AAU National tournament in Louisville taking place and some events happening in New Jersey. The Rivals — read: Wenyen Gabriel — are in Vegas at the adidas Uprising Championships so I would expect Ed Cooley will be all over them at that event.
