Monday Friar Mailbag: Last 2018 Scholarship, Holt Update & More

Each Monday I’ll do my best to answer some of your questions. The below are actual e-mails and tweets from readers. In some cases I have cleaned up the questions for grammar and/or clarity.

After a week off while honeymooning, the Monday Friar Mailbag returns. I saved some questions from the last version that I’ll answer in this one and I got a bunch of good ones over the weekend. Providence now has a 4-man recruiting class in 2018 with the pledge of David Duke on Friday. A common question has been what will Ed Cooley do with the final open scholarship for 2018. Let’s tackle that first…

2018 David Duke Commits to Hometown Providence Friars

Ed Cooley has landed hometown guard David Duke to add a second top-50 player out of the Mass Rivals pipeline to Providence’s 2018 recruiting class. Duke, who announced his decision via social media on Friday — his 18th birthday– chose the Friars over Virginia Tech after also considering Indiana, Florida and Villanova as a final 5. He joins AJ Reeves, Kris Monroe and Jimmy Nichols as committed recruits for the 2018-19 season. Duke’s recruitment had Friar fans on pins and needles, especially as his ranking and profile began to soar after transferring away from local public school Classical High School to Cushing Academy 75 miles north in Ashburnham, MA and spending the last two Spring’s and Summer’s on the adidas circuit with Mass Rivals.

Friar Friday News & Notes: David Duke Commitment Day Edition

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including David Duke commitment day, an Emmitt Holt update and more.

Duke to Commit Friday Evening

This column has been a place for updates and news that have happened over the last week, but I’ll lead off this Friday with something that hasn’t happened yet. 2018 Cushing Academy and Mass Rivals guard David Duke announced on Wednesday that he will commit Friday evening.

We learned later via Kevin McNamara at the Providence Journal that the announcement is expected to come via Duke’s social media accounts. The former Classical High School hero is down to the hometown Friars and Buzz Williams’ Virginia Tech Hokies. The steam picked up on 247Sports Crystal Ball page on Thursday with all but one previous Virginia Tech pick flipping to Providence and some new picks coming out of the clouds for the Friars. I’ve remained optimistic that Duke would end up in black and white. We’ll see if that comes to fruition for the athletic guard who turned 18 on Friday.

Providence’s Culture of Winning Drives Recruiting Success

The Providence Friars have become a constant fixture in the NCAA Tournament. Ed Cooley has taken a program that hadn’t been to the Big Dance since 2004 to a school-record four straight NCAA Tournaments. He also has a roster that is poised for a fifth consecutive appearance in 2017-18, though college basketball betting odds offered by sportsbooks don’t appear too highly on the Friars’ chances of actually winning the whole damn thing. That’s where recruiting comes in.

Monday Friar Mailbag: David Duke Recruitment, 2017-18 Lineups & More

Each Monday I’ll do my best to answer some of your questions. The below are actual e-mails and tweets from readers. In some cases I have cleaned up the questions for grammar and clarity.

I got lots of questions about Providence native and top 2018 recruiting target David Duke. Let’s start there…

Tim C. asks:

Updates on David Duke? When should we expect a decision? Are the Friars still the front runners after he scheduled official visits to Florida and Virginia Tech?

Providence Recruits Attending the 2017 NBPA Top 100 Camp

Providence has several recruits among the 108 players attending the 2017 NBPA Top 100 camp being held June 13th through 18th at the University of Virginia. This event is typically chock full of talented players in the rising senior and junior classes and it’s no different in 2017. Providence incoming freshman Makai Ashton-Langford attended this camp last year. One other interesting thing to note that usually happens at this event is the June 15th date for coaches to begin to have direct and unlimited contact with rising juniors. That begins at midnight on Thursday. The camp begins today and runs through Sunday.

Here is a list of Providence recruits attending the 2017 NBPA Top 100 Camp:

Providence 2017-18 Roster Rundown

Providence dropped their updated roster for the 2017-18 season over the weekend. The Friars added four new names and four names from 2016-17 are gone. Some players grew in height and/or weight, while one player shrunk an inch. No returning players changed their number. Here’s the 2017-18 Providence Friars roster as of June 5, 2017:
