Friar Friday News & Notes, Including a God Shammgod Update

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including a God Shammgod update, Providence’s upcoming visitors, an updated Scout.com 2019 recruit rankings, and more.

God Signs an Extension

God Shammgod left Providence for a job in player development with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks last July. After a successful year in Dallas in which Shammgod has received credit for the improvement of Harrison Barnes, the Mavs locked up the former Friar with a 4-year contract extension. While Barnes’ improvement is noteworthy for the Mavs after they signed him to a 4-year, $94.4 million contract, what may be motivating the Mavericks to keep Shammgod around is Dennis Smith, Jr. Shammgod and Smith have a prior relationship from Smith’s high school days and he is expected to be the point guard of the future after being taken 9th overall in April’s NBA Draft.

Friar Friday News & Notes with a Ben Bentil Update

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, which includes news about a former Friar, a pair of official visitors, new 2019 offers and more.

Ben Bentil Heading to France

Former Friar Ben Bentil, who has been working out and taking classes at Providence this Summer, is taking his talents to France this season. He signed with Chalons-Reims in the French Pro A league after playing just 3 games with the San Antonio Spurs between the Las Vegas and Salt Lake City NBA Summer Leagues. Bentil played 3 games last season in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks during a 10-day contract after he returned from a stint in China that included 11 games with Xinjiang Guanghui in which Bentil averaged 13.7 points/game and 4.8 rebounds/game. Bentil scored 19 points in his preseason debut with Chalons-Reims on Thursday against Brussels.

Providence Recruiting Guide to the Second July 2017 Live Evaluation Period

The second July live evaluation period has arrived and the Providence coaching staff will be out and about stalking down talented future Friars all across the country over the next few days. A live evaluation period means college coaches are allowed to attend and evaluate recruits at certified events. This particular evaluation period begins on July 19th at 5pm and is active through 5pm on July 23rd. To read about why the July live periods are so crucial for recruiting, check out this excellent article by Rob Dauster at College Basketball Talk. With all three major shoe company circuits holding their finals events during the first live period, the second live period features more camp events, as well as some more traditional grassroots tournaments with pool and bracketed play all starting and ending this week/weekend.

As I traditionally do each spring and summer, I’ll be providing a guide for fans to follow along and see where Providence’s targets are playing during a given live evaluation period. This post will be updated as the weekend goes on and more information is known. The name of the assistant next to the player’s name indicates who the lead assistant is for that player and does not necessarily mean that coach will be at that event

Providence Recruiting Update: Class of 2019 Phones Ringing

June 15th at 12:00am marked the first time that coaches could directly contact members of the class of 2019 — rising high school juniors. Ed Cooley and his staff worked the phones all day and reached out to a number of targets. The annual tradition with each rising junior class leads to a bevy of tweets about interest and offers and the Providence staff made their fair share of contact already with the class of 2019. A bigger deal is made of this first contact period but it does give media members and fans an idea about which players Providence is prioritizing and trying to build a relationship with between now and the early signing period for this class in November of 2018. Let’s take a look at some of the new and notable names that heard from the Friars on June 15th.
