Ed Cooley told Jon Rothstein of FanRagSports.com that the MRI on Kyron Cartwright‘s ankle came back negative and the senior point guard’s status for Wednesday’s game against Houston at Mohegan Sun is to be determined. Cooley also told Rothstein that Alpha Diallo (ankle) and Maliek White (knee) were held out of Monday’s practice and are both questionable to play against the Cougars.
Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including Providence’s recruiting efforts, Jon Rothstein’s annual practice visit, a fun segment with Ed Cooley on Big East Shootaround, and more.
Recruiting Never Stops
Recruiting never stops and that’s certainly true when the NCAA recruiting calendar turns from “Quiet Period” to “Recruiting Period”, which happened on September 9th. The Friar staff — the full staff of Ed Cooley, Jeff Battle, Brian Blaney and Ivan Thomas — was spotted at Cushing Academy that first day to see prized 2018 recruit David Duke. The Friar staff subsequently completed an in-home visit with Duke and his family. Duke’s recruitment is one that has Friar fans on the edge of their seat. He’s not only a local kid from Providence, but he reminds many of former Friar and current Chicago Bull Kris Dunn. Duke is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida next weekend, followed by an official visit to Virginia Tech where his good friend and former Cushing roommate Wabissa Bede is a freshman.
Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, which included a 2018 commitment.
Nichols Picks Providence
It traditionally doesn’t bode well for Providence in a recruitment when a player decides to announce his commitment at a big ceremony or on TV. So, when it was announced that 2018 Jimmy Nichols, who had just returned from an official visit to Friartown over the weekend, would end his recruitment by announcing his choice live on TV there were more than a few among the Friar Faithful that were skeptical of Providence’s chances, especially when Nichols’ hometown school was in the mix. But, alas, the TV announcement wasn’t on ESPN and Nichols didn’t do any pomp or circumstance. The Conway, SC native matter-of-factly announced that he would be playing his college ball at Providence College.
Early September is here and aside from recruiting news, of which Providence has had quite a bit lately, the biggest announcements are league schedules and future November tournaments. The Big East schedule was supposed to come out this week, but that apparently will not happen with the news that it will be bumped until next week. But Jon Rothstein swooped in to provide Providence fans a glimpse at the 2018 schedule by reporting that the Friars, along with Michigan, South Carolina and George Washington, will play in the 2018 Hall of Fame Classic at Mohegan Sun next November.
Providence junior Rodney Bullock put his name into the NBA Draft to test the waters at the end of March. On Monday, Jon Rothstein reported that Bullock will return to Providence for his senior season. Bullock became the first Providence player who took advantage of the new rule allowing players to declare for the NBA Draft without an agent and then return to school. Ben Bentil declared for the 2016 draft without an agent but eventually opted to sign with one and keep his name in past the deadline to return. Bentil was drafted 51st overall in 2016 by the Boston Celtics.
Jon Rothsein is reporting that the Providence Friars are heading back to the Mohegan Sun Arena in nearby Uncasville, CT for a neutral site matchup against the Houston Cougars on December 20th. Providence last played at Mohegan Sun in the 2014-15 season as part of the Hall of Fame Tipoff. The Friars defeated Florida State and Notre Dame to take home the trophy. This game, which Rothstein reported is likely to be part of a double-header, will just be a neutral site game and not part of a tournament. The Friars are playing in the 2017 2K Classic in November. It’s unclear if the deal will include a game or games at Providence and/or Houston.
