Providence’s game against DePaul on January 12th in Chicago will be special for being the Friars’ first trip to the new Wintrust Arena that the Blue Demons debuted this season. But it will also be special because this will be a unique production put on by Fox Sports. The game, which tips at 8:30pm ET, will air on FS1 without commercials and feature both head coaches mic’d up for the entire game. The announcers on FS1 will be Joe Davis and Len Elmore. Fox Sports experimented with this concept last season during a women’s game featuring St. John’s and Seton Hall. Highlights of that broadcast can be seen below to get a feel for the concept.

One thing that struck me while watching the teams answer each other and seesaw the lead back and forth over the course of 45 minutes of game action was that the refs didn’t seem to be involved. For me to not even notice Tony Chiazza until the second half is telling. Providence was only whistled for 4 team fouls and Villanova 6 in the first 20 minutes of the game. You read that correctly: neither team got into the bonus in the first half. That’s pretty amazing with the way referees are making themselves household names these days.
