Annual Big East Meetings Underway in Florida

The Big East conference is holding their annual offseason meetings in Ponte Vedra, FL this week. The meetings will be lead by Big East commissioner Val Ackerman and will include “planning sessions with the ten-member school’s athletic directors, senior woman administrators, and men’s and women’s basketball head coaches,” according to a release sent out by the league. The meetings began on Monday and the agenda items include:

Kris Dunn Named to 2016 USA Basketball Men’s Select Team

Kris Dunn was one of 25 players announced on Tuesday that will be members of the 2016 USA Basketball Select Team. The Select Team trains with and against the USA Basketball National Team as the National Team prepares for the Rio Olympics in August. Dunn is joined by fellow college players Malcolm Brogdon (Virginia), Brandon Ingram (Duke), Brice Johnson (North Carolina) and Denzel Valentine (Michigan State). The other 20 players are already in the NBA.

How the Big East Made $20 Million in 17 Days

Win or lose, Villanova has already added over $8.5 million to the Big East’s coffers by making it to the title game of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Butler, Providence and Xavier have each brought more than $3.4 million back to the league by making it the Round of 32 and Seton Hall earned over $1.7 million just by being in the party for a day. This is the other side of winning in March that is so critical for the Big East. The 10 member schools that make up this configuration of the Big East conference have a lot in common as institutions, which is partly why they believe their marriage is made in heaven. Besides their love for basketball, the Big East member institutions don’t have the financial backing of their home state to help drive their athletic programs to championship heights.
