2017 Big East Media Day Preview: pcbb1917.com Preseason Picks

The annual event where media meet with the Big East’s coaches and players is upon us on Wednesday. It’s the day when the coach-voted preseason poll is released and fans get more fuel to believe everyone roots against their team — unless you’re team is Villanova. I will be in attendance again this year, so you should follow the site to be informed when I post things and also follow along on Twitter and Instagram so you don’t miss out on the All-League teams or what suit Kyron Cartwright goes with this year.

Friar Friday News & Notes: David Duke Commitment Day Edition

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including David Duke commitment day, an Emmitt Holt update and more.

Duke to Commit Friday Evening

This column has been a place for updates and news that have happened over the last week, but I’ll lead off this Friday with something that hasn’t happened yet. 2018 Cushing Academy and Mass Rivals guard David Duke announced on Wednesday that he will commit Friday evening.

We learned later via Kevin McNamara at the Providence Journal that the announcement is expected to come via Duke’s social media accounts. The former Classical High School hero is down to the hometown Friars and Buzz Williams’ Virginia Tech Hokies. The steam picked up on 247Sports Crystal Ball page on Thursday with all but one previous Virginia Tech pick flipping to Providence and some new picks coming out of the clouds for the Friars. I’ve remained optimistic that Duke would end up in black and white. We’ll see if that comes to fruition for the athletic guard who turned 18 on Friday.

Some players grew in height and/or weight, while one player shrunk an inch. No returning players changed their number. Here’s the 2017-18 Providence Friars roster as of June 5, 2017:

The Other Shoe Dropped Against USC, Future Remains Bright in Friartown

Obviously the result of this game wasn’t what Providence fans wanted. The 15 point halftime lead never truly felt comfortable. That’s a product of watching plenty of Providence games over the years that has fans always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Usually that other shoe is a player transferring or an injury or a coach leaving that cripples the program in the short term and sometimes even the long term.
