Friar Friday News & Notes, Including a God Shammgod Update

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, including a God Shammgod update, Providence’s upcoming visitors, an updated Scout.com 2019 recruit rankings, and more.

God Signs an Extension

God Shammgod left Providence for a job in player development with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks last July. After a successful year in Dallas in which Shammgod has received credit for the improvement of Harrison Barnes, the Mavs locked up the former Friar with a 4-year contract extension. While Barnes’ improvement is noteworthy for the Mavs after they signed him to a 4-year, $94.4 million contract, what may be motivating the Mavericks to keep Shammgod around is Dennis Smith, Jr. Shammgod and Smith have a prior relationship from Smith’s high school days and he is expected to be the point guard of the future after being taken 9th overall in April’s NBA Draft.

Providence has added yet another versatile player to their 2018 recruiting class with the news that Conway, SC forward Jimmy Nichols has chosen Providence over Miami and South Carolina. Nichols announced his decision on WPDE-15, the local ABC affiliate in Myrtle Beach, Tuesday night after taking his official visit to Friartown September 1st through 3rd. The plan was for Nichols to visit South Carolina this upcoming weekend and then Miami at the end of the month, but Nichols apparently saw enough while on his visit to Providence that he shut down his recruitment and pledged to Ed Cooley. Nichols now makes three committed recruits for 2018 to go with AJ Reeves and Kris Monroe.

2018 Noah Locke Cuts List to 8 Following July Live Periods

2018 shooter Noah Locke cut his list down to 8 schools on Wednesday after having an impressive spring and summer on the grassroots circuits. The native of Baltimore has trimmed things down to Florida, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio State, Providence, Virginia and Xavier. Locke attended Providence’s Elite Camp in 2016, which is when he received the offer from Ed Cooley. He also took in the Friars’ game at the Verizon Center against Georgetown in January. Providence assistant coaches Ivan Thomas, the lead on Locke, and Jeff Battle both completed an in-home visit with Locke and his family in April. Cooley was unable to attend due to the death of his sister. The Friars were the first school to offer Locke of the 8 on his list.

Providence Recruiting Guide to the Third July 2017 Live Evaluation Period

The third and final July live evaluation period has arrived and the Providence coaching staff will be out and about stalking down talented future Friars all across the country over the next few days. A live evaluation period means college coaches are allowed to attend and evaluate recruits at certified events. This particular evaluation period begins on July 26th at 5pm and is active through 5pm on July 30th. To read about why the July live periods are so crucial for recruiting, check out this excellent article by Rob Dauster at College Basketball Talk. The third and final live period is very heavy on events in Las Vegas and don’t be surprised to see the same team criss-crossing all over town to play in more than one event throughout the live period.

As I traditionally do each spring and summer, I’ll be providing a guide for fans to follow along and see where Providence’s targets are playing during a given live evaluation period. This post will be updated as the weekend goes on and more information is known. The name of the assistant next to the player’s name indicates who the lead assistant is for that player and does not necessarily mean that coach will be at that event

With all three major shoe company circuits holding their finals events during the first live period, the second live period features more camp events, as well as some more traditional grassroots tournaments with pool and bracketed play all starting and ending this week/weekend.
