Friar Friday News & Notes with a Ben Bentil Update

Here are some Providence news and notes from the week, which includes news about a former Friar, a pair of official visitors, new 2019 offers and more.

Ben Bentil Heading to France

Former Friar Ben Bentil, who has been working out and taking classes at Providence this Summer, is taking his talents to France this season. He signed with Chalons-Reims in the French Pro A league after playing just 3 games with the San Antonio Spurs between the Las Vegas and Salt Lake City NBA Summer Leagues. Bentil played 3 games last season in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks during a 10-day contract after he returned from a stint in China that included 11 games with Xinjiang Guanghui in which Bentil averaged 13.7 points/game and 4.8 rebounds/game. Bentil scored 19 points in his preseason debut with Chalons-Reims on Thursday against Brussels.

Providence Recruiting Update: Class of 2019 Phones Ringing

June 15th at 12:00am marked the first time that coaches could directly contact members of the class of 2019 — rising high school juniors. Ed Cooley and his staff worked the phones all day and reached out to a number of targets. The annual tradition with each rising junior class leads to a bevy of tweets about interest and offers and the Providence staff made their fair share of contact already with the class of 2019. A bigger deal is made of this first contact period but it does give media members and fans an idea about which players Providence is prioritizing and trying to build a relationship with between now and the early signing period for this class in November of 2018. Let’s take a look at some of the new and notable names that heard from the Friars on June 15th.

Scout’s Updated and Expanded Class of 2019 Top 100 Player Rankings Released

With the Spring live periods of April and the various non-live period events in May in the rear-view mirror Scout.com released an updated and expanded Class of 2019 rankings on Thursday. The previous rankings were only a Top 60. The Friar staff is still looking into adding a player for next season and the main focus beyond that is the Class of 2018, but it’s key for relationship building to start as early as possible. Unlimited electronic communication just started for coaches and members of the 2019 class on June 15th at midnight. Here are players Providence is involved with in the class of 2019 on Scout’s latest  Top 100:
