Providence Lands Commitment from 2025 (Maybe 2024?) Top-25 Big Man Erhunmwunse Oswin

Kim English has secured a commitment from top-25 big man in the class of 2025 in Erhunmwunse Oswin on Thursday. The announcement was made live in YouTube with 247Sports’ Adam Finkelstein. The other three finalists were Creighton, Georgia Tech and Oklahoma. While the Friars were thought to be in good position for Oswin, the behind the scenes jockeying was apparently still ongoing until Wednesday night. English and the Friars did come out on top in this recruitment and the next question will be whether Oswin, who led Putnam Science Academy to a prep national championship in March 2023, will be in college next season — by reclassifying from 2025 to 2024 — or stick with his current grade level and enroll at a school in the Summer/Fall of 2025. Based on rumblings it would surprise me if Oswin wasn’t in college this Summer/Fall.

There was plenty of intrigue in this recruitment of the big man from Nigeria and it’s always hard to find the truth in the fog of war, but this is a great get for the Friars who will have to replace graduate student Josh Oduro in the frontcourt next season. What I can tell you is that this is a player that English and staff, largely Dennis Felton, prioritized right from the beginning of their time in Friartown. A source told pcbb1917.com that Felton had seen Oswin a few times prior to even being back at Providence, and met with Putnam Science Academy coaches specifically to discuss Oswin on the day of English’s introductory press conference on March 29, 2023. Oswin has been spotted at many games this season and did take an official visit to Providence right before Christmas. It’s clear he felt comfortable around the Providence program and used the phrase “staying home” in his commitment announcement. Oswin hasn’t played yet this season for Putnam Science due to a shoulder injury, but is expected to make his season debut on Friday at Hoophall. Providence currently has one commitment in the class of 2024 in Newman School’s Ryan Mela.

Wow! Nice get for Kim and staff. Looks like a big man that can help sooner rather than later. Unusual.
