The 2019 USA Basketball squad for the Pan Am games in Lima, Peru later this Summer has a decidedly Providence vibe. The Friars’ Ed Cooley will be the head coach of the team that will train in Friartown at the Ruane Friar Development Center, and the roster includes five Providence players among the 15 player team. Alpha Diallo, David Duke, Luwane Pipkins, A.J. Reeves and Nate Watson will be joined by current Big East players Ty-Shon Alexander (Creighton), Myles Cale (Seton Hall), Collin Gillespie (Villanova), Mustapha Heron (St. John’s), Sean McDermott (Butler), Myles Powell (Seton Hall) and Jermaine Samuels (Villanova). With nearly half the league taking international trips this August, the team will also feature three former Big East players in Geoffrey Groselle (Creighton), Greg Malinowski (Georgetown) and Tyler Wideman (Butler). The final roster will consist of 12 active players and 3 alternates. Cooley’s assistant coaches will be Seton Hall head coach Kevin Willard and Brown head coach Mike Martin. The basketball competition at the 2019 Pan Am Games will be played July 31st through August 4th.
“I am looking forward to getting our squad together next month for the Pan Am Games,” Cooley said in a release. “I think our committee did a great job putting together a strong roster to represent our country and our league. As I look through the roster, I think we will display the toughness and skill that defines BIG EAST Basketball. This will be an exciting summer for our entire team. When you have the opportunity to represent your country, it is special honor.”
Per the release, “the team will play five games in five days in Lima. The U.S. squad will open play in Pool A against Virgin Islands on July 31 followed by contests against Venezuela on Aug. 1 and Puerto Rico on Aug. 2 before medal round play on Aug. 3-4. The Pool B Participants are: Argentina, Dominican Republic, Mexico and Uruguay.”
