Recap
- Providence welcomed Seton Hall to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on Wednesday for the 103rd meeting between the two schools all-time. Providence and Seton Hall both got off to solid starts and both squads had to deal with early foul trouble. Desi Rodriguez and Kyron Cartwright both picked up 2 fouls before the Under 12 timeout. Rodriguez would return ahead of the Under 8 timeout and the Pirates would eventually overtake Providence’s meager lead they were holding onto sans Cartwright. Cartwright would return with a little more than 5 minutes to go in the first half logged just 10 minutes. Rodriguez was injured in front of the Providence bench after slipping going around a screen. He was taken right to the locker room with 3:48 to go. Seton Hall didn’t end the half on the 19-0 run they managed in Newark a few weeks ago, but the Pirates finished the final 8 minutes on a 22-12 run to lead, 39-34, at the break. If not for a nifty And-1 by Cartwright just before the halftime buzzer it would have been a 8 point deficit for the Friars. The second half started off slowly for Providence with some misses near the rim bringing flashbacks to Saturday’s disastrous 5/32 shooting performance. However, Rodney Bullock hit a much needed 3-pointer the draw the Friars within 4 before Delgado hit a bucket after shuffling the puppies to take a 6-point Seton Hall lead to the U16 timeout. Delgado kept the paint scoring going with an And-1 that stretched Seton Hall’s lead to 8 with just under 15 minutes to go in the game. Seesaw action with a Providence bucket and a rare 4-point play on a fluke by Myles Powell got the Pirates into a double digit lead. With about 13 minute to go the slip and slide storyline came to the forefront with an unfortunate repeat of the late February debacle at the Dunk against Marquette that resulted in the officials adjusting the rules of the game to allow for slips to not count as turnovers. This time the officiating crew decided to suspend action with 13:03 remaining due to unsafe conditions. The game picked up at 12pm on Thursday at Alumni Hall on Providence’s campus. After the restart the teams traded buckets and runs with the Friars getting within 1 and the Pirates stretching their lead up to 12. Alpha Diallo picked up a questionable 4th foul and then would eventually foul out with just under 3 minutes remaining. A late flurry by Jalen Lindsey, who was 1/5 from the field before a late triple, and some offensive spark by Maliek White off the bench gave the roughly 1,000 fans inside Alumni Hall some hope of a comeback, but it was not to be.
- Providence was led by Kyron Cartwright with 25 points on 9/17 shooting, including 15 after the game resumed on Thursday. He also added 6 assists. Cartwright went over 600 career assists last time out and in this game he accomplished another milestone scoring his 1,000th point near the end of this game.
- Seton Hall was led by Khadeen Carrington with 25 points on 8/13 shooting.
- Seton Hall shot 55% from the field for the game, including 58% in the second half.
- Providence falls to 17-11 on the season and their record in Big East play is now 8-7 with 3 games regular season games remaining.
- The Friars travel to the nation’s capital for take on Georgetown on Saturday at Capital One Arena. That game tips at 12:00pm and will be on CBS Sports Network.
