The Debut of the Providence NCAA Tournament Team Sheet Page

We are now 40 days away from Selection Sunday and Providence is firmly in the mix for a 5th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. With that in mind I am happy to announce the launch of a new page on pcbb1917.com: Providence NCAA Tournament Team Sheet

I hope this page, which is linked to the top of every page on the website, provides an up to date one-stop shop for you to see what the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee will be looking at when they consider Providence for an at-large spot should the Friars not roll their way to a Big East Tournament title in March. Below I’ll provide a brief description of each thing you’ll see on the new page. I’ll try to provide regular posts to give context to the metrics and other numbers and do some comparisons with teams that are in Providence’s ballpark in terms of potential seed.

Metrics

  • RPI, KPI, SOR – The Results Metrics
    • Most people will recognize the RPI from TV. This is the one metric the NCAA Selection Committee used on the Team Sheets previously and was a way to judge teams using the same number. KPI is a metric designed by Kevin Pauga that is similar to the RPI but takes some additional information into account. The SOR, or Strength of Record, is a metric created by ESPN and it’s aim is to rate a team’s strength of schedule and then take in a step further to rate how the team did against their schedule.
  • BPI, Kenpom, Sagarin – The Predictive Metrics
    • These three rankings are meant to be predictive and use data to look ahead. BPI, Kenpom and Sagarin take into account things like how a team won a game, strength of the opponent, making adjustments for the pace of the game, etc. For these models it’s less about straight wins and losses and more about using how a team won or lost to predict future outcomes.

Quadrants

This is new for the 2017-18 season. Previously the Committee organized opponents in set ranges like an RPI of 1-50. That failed to take into account where a game was played and the difficulty of playing a team on the road versus a team at home or on a neutral court. In light of that, the new quadrant system is meant to try to take that into account and organize games based on the opponent’s RPI and where the game took place. I’ll give the exact ranges for all four quadrants below. While this won’t be perfect it does a better job of giving Providence credit for beating, say, St. John’s on the road (Quadrant 2) versus beating them at home (Quadrant 3).

  • Quadrant 1
    • Home RPI 1-30
    • Neutral RPI 1-50
    • Away RPI 1-75
  • Quadrant 2
    • Home RPI 31-75
    • Neutral RPI 51-100
    • Away RPI 76-135
  • Quadrant 3
    • Home RPI 76-160
    • Neutral RPI 101-200
    • Away RPI 136-240
  • Quadrant 4
    • Home RPI 160+
    • Neutral RPI 200+
    • Away RPI 240+
