  • Providence and Stony Brook met for the 2nd time ever on Sunday afternoon at the Dunk. The Friars were without sophomores Alpha Diallo and Maliek White who remain “day-to-day” with injuries suffered in the Friars’ win against Brown on December 6th. To make matters worse for Providence, Kyron Cartwright came down on a defender’s foot and turned his right ankle, the same ankle that has been sore since the Boston College game. The Friars were in real trouble in the second half. Stony Brook led by as many as 11 before the Friars, who were in the midst of an 0/11 field goal streak, went on a Tom Planek-fueled run to storm all the way back. Planek entered the game and the Friars started implementing a press that brought energy to a largely lifeless Friar unit to that point. The two key components down the stretch were the freshmen pair of Nate Watson and Makai Ashton-Langford. Watson, who got his first career start, could not be stopped down low and Ashton-Langford had a key and-1 and a late steal. Rodney Bullock hit the game-winning free throws after being fouled on a putback attempt with 0.6 seconds left in the game.
  • Providence was led by Nate Watson with 15 points on 7/11 shooting. He also had 3 rebounds in 19 minutes.
  • Also in double figures for the Friars were Isaiah Jackson with 13 points and Rodney Bullock with 12.
  • Stony Brook was led by Akwasi Yeboah with 22 points on 8/13 shooting. He added 12 rebounds to notch a double-double.
  • Also in double figures for the Seahawks was Jaron Cornish who had 10 points after battling foul trouble for stretches.
  • Providence improved to 8-3 on the season with two more non-conference games remaining before Big East play begins at St. John’s on December 28th.
  • The Friars head south on 95 to take on Houston at Mohegan Sun in their next game as part of the Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase. That game tips at 7pm and will air on ESPNU.
