  • Providence and UConn renewed their rivalry on Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena in the name of charity. Proceeds from this event will go to the American Red Cross’ Disaster Relief Fund to help those impacted by the hurricanes over the last few months. A check for $75,000 was presented to the Red Cross at halftime.
  • The atmosphere at Mohegan Sun felt like a little more than an exhibition, but the action on the floor started out as sluggish as a first outing might suggest. Providence started Kyron Cartwright, Isaiah Jackson, Alpha Diallo, Rodney Bullock and Kalief Young and got minutes off the bench from Makai Ashton-Langford, Nate Watson, Dajour Dickens and Drew Edwards. Neither Jalen Lindsey nor Maliek White saw the floor. Lindsey also sat out Providence’s Mal Brown Scrimmage last Saturday.
  • Providence led by 9 at the half, though a horrific 55% from the free throw line on 20 attempts kept their lead from being more convincing. The Friars showed up in the second half while UConn appeared to forget about the 2nd 20 minutes. The Friars went on a run and never looked back.
  • Jackson led the scoring for Providence with 16 points on 4/4 from the field. He did most of his scoring from the free throw line where he went 7/8. He also pulled down 4 rebounds
  • Diallo also had a strong showing. He finished with 15 points on 5/8 shooting and hit some early triples. He led the Friars with 7 rebounds.
  • Ashton-Langford played some very good minutes for Ed Cooley in this game. He finished with 10 points and 4 assists in 26 minutes of action.
  • Bullock was also in double figures for the game. He scored 15 points on 5/7 from the field. He also had 5 rebounds in 25 minutes.
  • Cartwright only played 23 minutes but was efficient in his time on the floor. He was 4/4 from the field and finished with 13 points and 5 assists.
  • The Friars were clearly the better team in Uncasville on this night. Kevin Ollie has a fairly new group and he didn’t appear to have any answers against the experienced and deep Providence team.
  • Jalen Adams led the way for the Huskies with 22 points on 5/15 shooting. Also in double figures for UConn was Christian Vital with 17 points on 6/14 from the field.
  • Providence shot 67% from the field, including 9/17 from beyond the arc. They shot a rough 60% from the free throw line, 21/35.
  • UConn shot 37% from the field, including 6/22 from 3-point range. The Huskies were 77% from the line, 24/31.
  • The Friars play their first exhibition game at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center against Canadian powerhouse Carleton University. The game tips Saturday, October 28th at 4:00pm EDT. The game will be not be televised.
