Providence and UConn to Play Hurricane Relief Benefit Exhibition

With the NCAA granting waivers for schools to play beyond their 2 exhibition games in the name of hurricane benefit games, Providence and UConn will renew their rivarly, albeit in a game that doesn’t count. Tickets are now on sale for a game between the Friars and Huskies to be played at 7pm at Mohegan Sun on Wednesday, October 25th. Click here to purchase tickets. Tickets range from $10 to $25. “All proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to benefit hurricane victims,” per the release sent out by Providence.

“I am happy that we have this opportunity to help some of the victims that have suffered so much from the devastating effects of the hurricanes that hit last month,” Providence College Head Coach Ed Cooley said. “As soon as I reached out to Kevin [Ollie], he was excited to play the game and have his program be involved in this event. We hope that the great fan bases from both schools will come together to support this cause.”

Providence and UConn last played on March 9, 2013 in Storrs during the final season of the previous configuration of the Big East. UConn won that game, 63-59. The two schools have been rumored to want to renew the rivalry but this will be as close as they get for the time being. The first ever meeting was on January 21, 1928. Another rivalry being renewed this way is Kansas vs. Missouri. The two haven’t played since Missouri left the Big XII, but they are getting together to raise money to benefit those impacted by hurricanes this year.

Providence will play their Mal Brown scrimmage on October 21st at Alumni Hall and the Friars will also play Canadian college power Carleton University and Division III Baruch College in exhibitions at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on October 28th and November 4th, respectively.
