Providence Guards Drew Edwards and Maliek White to Travel to Spain in August

Providence announced on Wednesday that junior guard Drew Edwards and sophomore guard Maliek White will travel to Madrid, Spain in August as members of the 2017 USA East Coast team. Edwards and White will play for Hall of Fame coach Larry Brown during this 5-day trip from August 7th through the 12th.

The USA East Coast team will have a training camp on August 5th and 6th and will take on national teams from Japan, Mexico, Senegal and Venezuela while in Spain. Edwards and Jalen Lindsey did a similar trip in the summer of 2015 with Global Sports Academy. That trip was to Croatia. This year’s trip should be especially good for Edwards who missed most of last season after a slow recovery from offseason knee surgery that occurred about a year ago.

Providence’s Drew Edwards and Maliek White Named to USA East Coast Roster

Providence, R.I. – It was announced on June 6 that on August 7-12, 2017 Providence College sophomore guards Drew Edwards (Perry Hall, Md.) and Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) will travel to Madrid, Spain to play for the 2017 USA East Coast team. Edwards and White are the first Friars to play for the East Coast team since Kadeem Batts participated in 2013. Coaching the team will be Hall of Fame Coach Larry Brown, who is the only coach ever to win an NBA and NCAA Championship. Other notable selections for the team include Rex Pflueger (Notre Dame), Austin Torres (Notre Dame), Rakym Felder (South Carolina) and Franklin Howard (Syracuse).

Sophomore guard Maliek White appeared in all 33 games last season for the Friars. Sophomore Drew Edwards appeared in only eight games last season due to a leg injury. He averaged 10 minutes a game in the 2015-16 season.

USA East Coast, founded in 2006 by Guy Rancourt, has traveled to 12 countries and competed against 22 national teams. The program aims to expose student-athletes to high-level international basketball, as well as the culture and lifestyle they might experience as pros abroad when their NCAA eligibility expires. Of its former players, 52 have gone on to play professionally. Those who have advanced to the NBA include Quinn Cook, Russ Smith, Dwight Powell, Mike Gbinije, Rakeem Christmas, Jarrod Uthoff and Marshall Plumlee.
