Providence’s Kyron Cartwright is Big East’s Most Improved Player

For the second straight season the Providence Friars are home to the Big East’s Most Improved Player. Kyron Cartwright was chosen by the league’s coaches as the 2016-17 Big East Most Improved Player a day after being named a Second Team All-Big East performer in his junior season with the Friars. Cartwright is the fourth player in school history to win this award and he’s the third player coached by Ed Cooley to do so.  Previous winner include Ben Bentil (2016), Kadeem Batts (2013) and Herbert Hill (2007).

Cartwright, who is back home in Compton, CA following the death of his grandmother on Friday, leads the Big East in assists. His 6.8 helpers/game is also 3rd best in the country this season. During Big East media day back in October, Cooley said he expected Cartwright to become the fourth Friar in Cooley’s six seasons at Providence to lead the Big East in assists. And while Cartwright’s offensive numbers didn’t quite triple, he nearly doubled his points/game average from 5.9 a season ago to 11.3 this season. His assists jumped from 4.0 to 6.8, he improved his 3-point shooting from 36.4% on 55 attempts to 38.7% on 75 attempts. The lefty did all of that while keeping his assists-to-turnover ratio at 2.4/1 after having a 2.8/1 mark last season playing alongside Kris Dunn.

Season MPG FG% 3P FG% FT% PPG APG TPG

2015-16 24.2 36.3% 36.4% 67.2% 5.9 4.0 1.4
2016-17 33.1 41.4% 38.7% 72.9% 11.3 6.8 2.8
Career 25.1 39.1% 32.5% 71.4% 6.8 4.4 1.8

Cartwright’s 211 assists this season currently rank 9th most assists in a season by a Providence player. Ernie DiGregorio has the record at 267 assists in the 1972-73 season. He also ranks 13th on the all-time assists chart at Providence with 439 career assists. Cartwright has started all 31 of Providence’s games this season and leads the team with 33.1 minutes/game. He has become a leader, on and off the court, and is a big reason behind Providence’s hot finish to the season. The Friars capped off their fourth straight 10-win season in Big East play on Saturday with a win over St. John’s at Madison Square Garden. Providence earned the 3 seed in this week’s Big East Tournament and will take on Creighton at 9:30pm ET on Thursday. The Big East’s Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards will be announced Wednesday at 4:30pm at Madison Square Garden.
