Providence Commits Among Updated Rivals Class of 2017 Top 150

Providence fans are probably still shaking off the cobwebs of a brutal loss at DePaul on Tuesday night. This news might help them recover. Rivals.com released their update Top 150 for the Class of 2017 on Wednesday and both of Providence’s committed big men made the cut. In fact, Nate Watson was well inside the Top 100. The Friars are one of the weakest teams in the Big East on the boards and adding the beefy Watson and 7-footer Dajour Dickens to the mix next season should help in that regard.

Watson, who was ranked 76th, is the more ready to contribute but it’s important to remember that freshmen, especially big men, tend to take a little longer to be ready to compete at a Big East level. Watson had a breakout spring and summer with the DC Premier on the Under Armour Association circuit and has been putting up excellent number at Bishop O’Connell in his final season of high school basketball.

Dickens, who came in at 110th, has size that the Friars haven’t seen since Paschal Chukwu left for Syracuse in May 2015. He also appears to have a body more ready for added weight than Chukwu once the Bethel HS product gets into a college weight room. Dickens is a product of the famed Boo Williams grassroots program and the Friars leaned heavily on their connection to that program with Ed Cooley and Jeff Battle having connections in their own rights while Ivan Thomas was a coach inside the Boo Williams program for years while he was a high school coach in Virginia.
