Providence Recruiting Update: Early Signing Period Begins November 9th

The early signing period for college basketball recruits to sign their national letters of intent begins on Wednesday, November 9th. The early signing period lasts for a week and then all players planning to sign NLI’s with schools must wait until the spring signing period from April 12, 2017 through May 17, 2017. Providence has two commits in the class of 2017 and word is that both plan to sign their NLI’s on the first day of the early signing period.

Providence’s current two-man recruiting class in 2017 began with Dajour Dickens. The near 7-footer visited Providence in mid-February and committed a couple weeks later. Sources told pcbb1917.com that Dickens is planning to sign during a ceremony at his high school — Bethel HS in Hampton, VA — on November 9th. Dickens ran with Boo Williams on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring and summer and is poised to have a big senior season at Bethel.

The other big man in the class of 2017 that Providence landed is Nate Watson. A source told pcbb1917.com that Watson plans to sign his NLI on November 9th and then take part in a signing ceremony at his school – Bishop O’Connell in Arlington, VA — on November 14th. Watson was one of the bigger stock-risers after the spring and summer grassroots seasons where he ran with DC Premier on the Under Armour Association circuit.

Being able to close out a recruiting class on the first day of the early signing period is a luxury that allows Ed Cooley and his staff to focus on future classes like 2018 and 2019. The results of that have already been seen with top recruits in 2018 like Khavon Moore, AJ Reeves and Cole Swider all making trips to Providence’s campus already this fall. I discussed this in some detail on an episode of the Friartown Fan Voice podcast in late October. For those scholarship math people, Providence is currently out of available scholarships for next season. I always like to qualify that by saying transfers happen at an increasingly rapid pace each season. As a result, a coaching staff can never truly stop recruiting the current senior class or any other type of recruit who would come to Providence in the fall of 2017. For now, the Friars are done and they’ll have the paperwork to prove it on November 9th from both of their commits.
