Shaq to Host and Perform at Providence’s 2016 Late Night Madness

Continuing the recent tradition of bringing in a big-time name for Late Night Madness, Providence announced on Friday that Shaquille O’Neil will host and perform at this year’s event on October 15th. Shaq, performing under the name DJ Diesel, is the second former NBA player-turned TV personality to host Providence’s Late Night Madness after Jalen Rose — the son of Friar legend Jimmy Walker — hosted the 2014 event. As usual, Late Night Madness will take place in Mullaney Gym in Alumni Hall. The event begins at 7pm. Last year Bill Raftery emceed the event while Ludacris performed after the on-court action was over. When Rose hosted two years ago it was Big Sean who performed. The initial big-time host and performer was in 2013 when Nick Cannon hosted and performed. This is always a big recruiting weekend for Ed Cooley and I would expect to see plenty of Friar targets in attendance on October 15th.

Here is the official release from Providence Athletics:

DJ DIESEL (a.k.a. SHAQUILLE O’NEAL) TO HOST AND PERFORM AT PROVIDENCE COLLEGE LATE NIGHT MADNESS IN MULLANEY GYM ON OCTOBER 15

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced today (September 16) that DJ Diesel (a.k.a Shaquille O’Neal) will host and perform at the Providence College Late Night Madness festivities on Saturday, October 15 in Mullaney Gymnasium on the Providence College campus. The Friar men’s and women’s basketball teams will open the season with the traditional Late Night Madness event beginning at 7:00 p.m.

O’Neal, who was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame earlier in the month, will co-emcee the event as well as host a concert, in which he will DJ, later in the evening.  O’Neal played in 1,207 games over 19 seasons in the NBA.  He also averaged 23.7 ppg and 10.9 rpg during his NBA career.  O’Neal has been involved in music for the last 20 years and more recently has served as a DJ at a number of worldwide events.

  1. […] Ed Cooley has managed to turn this annual basketball season kickoff event into something big-time. Each year it seems like it gets bigger and more well produced. Credit needs to also be given to Bob Driscoll and Steve Napolillo for being willing to commit additional funds to attract big names to perform like Nick Cannon in 2013, Big Sean in 2014, Ludacris in 2015 and now Shaquille O’Neal in 2016.
