Top Big Man Target Schedules Visit to Providence

On the heels of Providence’s top guard target in 2017 announcing his official visit dates to his final three schools, Providence got some more good news with their top big man target setting an official visit date to come visit Friartown. 2017 Nate Watson cut his list down to a final seven about three weeks ago with all seven besides North Carolina having already offered. On Monday, Watson’s visit dates were announced by Josh Stirn of 247Sports.com. Watson currently has five visits scheduled with just Kansas and North Carolina not having dates set. UPDATE: Watson cut his list from 7 to 5 on Tuesday and cut Kansas and UNC. As previously reported, Watson will take visits to NC State and Wake Forest while he is in North Carolina for a family party. The NC State visit is an official and is set for August 22nd and the Wake Forest trip will be unofficial on August 24th.

Unlike with Ashton-Langford, Providence will be the first school to get an official visit. Watson will be in Providence from September 9th-11th. He will then take a official visits to Maryland from September 30th-October 1st and then Miami from October 7th-9th. Watson has already been to Maryland on an unofficial visit and that is the school closest the home he lived at last school year in Upper Marlboro, MD. Watson is a native of Newport News, VA. It remains to be seen whether North Carolina will offer Watson or if he will take a trip out to Phog Allen Fieldhouse in Kansas, but he’ll have two more official visits to play with after he returns from his trip to Miami.

Watson was one of the biggest risers after his spring and summer on the Under Armour Association circuit with the DC Premier. He’s currently listed at 105th nationally by 247Sports’ composite national ranking. At 6’9 and 230lbs, Watson would be an excellent complement to 7-footer Dajour Dickens who committed to Cooley and the Friars back in February. Cooley has wanted to add size to his frontcourt. He began to answer that bell by landing Dickens for 2017 and bringing in Kalif Young for 2016.

Watson has been Providence’s top target this spring and summer and he has gotten the “full staff” treatment from the Providence coaching staff, though maybe not quite as frequently as with other top targets like Donovan Mitchell and Abdul-Malik Abu. September is shaping up to be a critical month for Cooley with his two top targets coming to campus on back-to-back weekends. Landing one of the two would mean a very good 2017 class. If Cooley somehow got both to commit then he’d have arguably his best class since Kris Dunn, Ricky Ledo and Josh Fortune committed to Providence in 2012.
