God Leaving Providence for the NBA, Again

Jon Rothstein is reporting that God Shammgod is leaving Providence to join the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA in the role of assistant of player development. Shammgod has been a mentor and trainer for several prominent recent Friars, including Bryce Cotton, LaDontae Henton, Ben Bentil and Kris Dunn.

A little more than nineteen years ago Shammgod decided to enter the 1997 NBA Draft. By applying for the draft he gave up two more years of eligibility at Providence after taking that 1996-97 Friars squad to the Elite Eight and a heartbreaking overtime loss to eventual national champion Arizona.

After a long career in Europe and Asia, Shammgod returned to Providence to finish his undergraduate degree and begin his second career. Part of his time on Ed Cooley’s staff was spent figuring out just what that next professional step would be. He knew he liked helping people, both on and off the court, and doing something in basketball certainly made sense for the man who has a move routinely performed by Chris Paul named after him. Last summer he flirted with a few NBA teams but decided to return for a season as graduate assistant pursuing an advanced degree in Leadership and Development.

Shammgod will now make the jump to the NBA world, a place he hasn’t been in quite some time. The Mavericks have some veteran guards for Shammgod to work with in Deron Williams and Wes Matthews. Williams is entering his 12th season in the NBA after being drafted by the Utah Jazz out of Illinois. Matthews also began his career with the Jazz after he went undrafted out of Marquette in 2009. He made his name with the Portland Trail Blazers and signed with the Mavericks last summer coming off a torn achilles tendon in March of 2015. Other guards on Dallas’ roster for 2016-17 are J.J. Barea, Seth Curry, Jonathan Gibson and Devin Harris.
