Providence Freshman Quadree Smith Transferring

Providence announced that freshman big man Quadree Smith “will not return to the College next season and will pursue other academic options.” Smith was a late addition to Providence’s 2015 recruiting class last summer to help add some size to a frontcourt depleted by the transfer of Paschal Chukwu. Smith played in 19 games, averaging 1.7 points/game and 1.1 rebounds/game. Despite getting just over 5 minutes/game last season, Smith was an excellent teammate and always appeared enthusiastic for his fellow Friars. He quickly became a fan favorite in his short time at Providence.

“Quadree’s energetic personality will be missed around the Providence College community,” Providence Head Coach Ed Cooley said.  “We appreciate all his contributions to the program this past year.  We wish him all the best as he looks to find a school that better fits his academic aspirations.” Smith will have to sit next season, per NCAA transfer rules. He will then have 3 years of eligibility remaining.

This move now frees up a scholarship, both for the upcoming 2016-17 season, as well as the 2017-18 season. The Friars had 14 scholarships committed for that latter season which was one over the limit. Providence is set to host 2016 Canadian big man Kalif Young in 10 days and this move means the Friars could take a commitment from Young and still be okay on scholarships should Ben Bentil opt to come back to school for his junior season in lieu of keeping his name in the 2016 NBA Draft.
