Report: Sacred Heart Transfer Cane Broome Visiting Providence

A report surfaced around 5:30pm that Sacred Heart transfer Cane Broome is visiting Providence today. Broome later confirmed the report with pcbb1917.com. He specified the visit was unofficial. The 6’0 guard announced his intention to transfer via Twitter on March 17th from the NEC program after two seasons and 1,157 points scored in 62 games, good for a career average of 18.7 points/game. His scoring average during the 2015-16 was 23.1 points/game and he was named the NEC’s Player of the Year. The East Hartford, CT native attended East Hartford High School before finishing up at St. Thomas More. He ran with both the New England Playaz and Expressions Elite on the grassroots circuit.

Broome told pcbb1917.com that he was on campus for an unofficial visit. During the visit he “checked out the campus and facilities [and] talked to coaches for awhile.” When asked about his impressions of campus, Broome noted the construction going on. He was shown plans for the Ruane Friar Development Center and said “that place is going to be crazy when it’s finished.” Looks like the upgraded facilities might already be paying off with recruits. Broome said the “coaches are down to earth and really cool.” He went on to say the he “really bonded with them” during his time on campus.

Broome scored 25 or more points fourteen times in his two seasons at Sacred Heart, including five games of 30 or more points. All of his 30 point games were this season and he finished off his career at Sacred Heart with 35 points in the team’s loss to LIU-Brooklyn in the NEC Tournament. His career-high is 39 points which he accomplished on February 20, 2016 against Fairleigh Dickinson, the eventual NEC Tournament champion who would be a 16 seed in the NCAA Tournament losing a First Four game to fellow 16 seed Florida Gulf Coast.

The knock on Broome coming out of high school was his size, both stature and strength. His ESPN scouting report as a recruit is rather glowing in the “Strengths” section, but it’s the “Weaknesses” section that reveals the reason for his 59 grade, 1 star and lack of high major attention:

His inability to add any noticeable muscle to his lean frame is a bit of a concern. While he is plenty battled tested at the highest levels of both AAU and prep competition, he’s going to have to get bigger and stronger in order to play through contact at the next level.

His three offers coming out of high school, according to VerbalCommits.com, were Quinnipaic, Sacred Heart and Wagner. Since he declared his intention to transfer, Broome has heard from the likes of Cincinnati, Creighton, NC State, Providence and others, per ESPN.com’s Jeff Borzello. Broome being on the Providence campus on Monday means there is serious mutual interest. It is also the first visit he has taken since getting his release from Sacred Heart. Broome would have to sit out a year, per NCAA transfer rules. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.
