Kris Dunn Repeats as Big East Player of the Year

Kris Dunn has been named the 2016 Big East Player of the Year. Dunn becomes the first Friar to win the award more than once after becoming the first Friar to ever win the award last season when he shared it with Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacono. Dunn was also named the 2016 Big East Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-Big East performer earlier in the week. The news was first reported by UndercoverFriar on Twitter.

Dunn entered the 2015-16 season with as much hype as any Providence player in the social media era. He was named to preseason watch lists for a bunch of national awards, preseason All-American team, Blue Ribbon’s preseason national player of the year and was the preseason Big East Player of the Year. Not to mention, Providence also created a separate microsite as part of their main Athletics website just for Dunn. That’s a lot of hype and Dunn was living up to it as Providence got off to a hot start and ascended to 8th in the AP poll, their highest ranking in since 1977.

Then came the slump and the illness. People were questioning his leadership and toughness. Dunn rebounded to finish strong over the last few league games and had a nice Senior Night sendoff at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center on March 2nd. He now has a chance to cement his legacy at Providence College by his play in March.

He finished the season averaging 16.3 points/game, 6.4 assists/game, 5.7 rebounds/game and 2.7 steals/game. The steals led the Big East and he was second in assists behind Maurice Watson of Creighton. Other awards announced on Wednesday were Jay Wright (Villanova) and Kevin Willard (Seton Hall) being named co-Coach of the Year, Henry Ellenson (Marquette) was named Big East Freshman of the Year and Kellen Dunham (Butler) was named Big East Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

It doesn’t make any sense. Bentil was a better player by far. Reputation is everything. I watched every single game. He played badly for many of them. Bizarre really.

It shows that stat lines are deceiving. Flaws are covered up. Voters don’t watch as many games as we did.

Voters are the coaches, so yea, they probably don’t have time to watch as many games.
