Providence Officially Lands Commitment from 2017 Big Man

Providence got some good news on the recruiting front after another loss on the court when 2017 Dajour Dickens officially committed to Ed Cooley and the Friars. The news comes directly from Dickens himself this time after a false start report last Friday. Dickens is a Virginia native and stands at 6’11. He visited Providence for the Georgetown game on February 13th and evidently liked what he saw. Dickens is enrolled at Bethel High School and runs with famed grassroots program Boo Williams.

Dajour Dickens tweeted this note confirming his commitment to Providence.

Ivan Thomas, Providence’s 1st year Associate Director of Player Development/Video Ops, has ties to the Boo Williams program from his days as a high school and AAU coach in Virginia. Thomas isn’t allowed to recruit players, but having him on the staff seems to already be paying dividends. Thomas also coached current Providence forward Rodney Bullock at Kecoughtan High School and former Providence guard Josh Fortune with Boo Williams. Andre LaFleur was the lead recruiter on Dickens.

Dickens is currently ranked 129th overall and the 12th-best center nationally by 247Sports Composite National Ranking. He also held offers from Clemson, Creighton, Memphis, Temple, Virginia and Virginia Tech, among a few others. Getting a rim protector, who could end up being a legitimate 7-footer by the time he gets to campus, is exactly the kind of player Cooley needed to add with the current frontcourt situation. An article from January at TarHeelIllustrated.com by Clint Jackson describes Dickens as “a rim protector and end to end runner who is starting to see his development move towards the ceiling that he has as a prospect.”

Dickens is Providence’s first commitment in the class of 2017. The Friars have 1 open scholarship left for 2017, though roster fluctuation being what it is in college basketball these days, looking that far ahead for number of open scholarships is a fool’s errand.
