While the Friar coaching staff is focusing on preparing for Villanova on Saturday and attending a local prep invitational at nearby Rhode Island College, they also managed to extend an offer to a player from Virginia on Thursday. Nate Watson is a 2017 big man who is enrolled at Bishop O’Connell is Virginia is the recipient of the latest Providence offer. The news was first reported by Corey Evans of hoopseen.com. Watson is ranked 157th in the class of 2017 by 247Sports.
Watson transferred to Bishop O’Connell after playing a season at Capitol Christian Academy — a startup school open since 2013 — despite a financial dispute between Capitol Christian and Watson’s mother. While at Capitol Christian, Watson was reclassified to the class of 2018, but he’s back in 2017 at Bishop O’Connell and his recruiting is starting to take off. He holds offers from George Mason, Georgia Tech, St. Joseph’s, USC, West Virginia and Xavier in addition to the shiny new one he just got from the Friars. He also has interest from Clemson, Georgetown, Maryland, New Mexico and Virginia Tech.
Watson recently was interviewed by Michael Bohlin of 247Sports. Watson listed running the floor and rebounding as his best attributes right now. A Rivals article from early in 2016 quoted Watson’s AAU coach from the DC Thunder. Fred Howze said “Nate is improving everyday. He’s strong, has a big frame. He has very good footwork and very soft hands…If he gets the ball deep in the post he’s looking to dunk it. He protects the rim and shoots free throws very well. ”
Watson joins a growing list of big men from the class of 2017 with offers from Providence, including Tomas Murphy and Deng Gak. The Friars are also looking to add at least 1 big man in 2016 with the focus seemingly on Kalif Young who had all 4 Providence coaches at his game last night at the National Prep Invitational.
