Former Friar Bryce Cotton Heading to China, Will Reportedly Sign with Xinjiang

Less than two weeks after re-joining the Austin Spurs of the NBA D-League, Bryce Cotton is reportedly heading overseas to China. The news of Cotton going overseas was first reported by Dennis Silva of the Monitor News. A subsequent report comes via Chris Reichert of Upside & Motor, a D-League blog. Reichert is the one who has indicated a source informed him that Cotton will take his talents to China and will sign with Xinjiang of the Chinese Basketball Association. Another former Friar Marshon Brooks is currently second in scoring (34.6 points/game) playing with Jiangsu and the CBA is where God Shammgod was playing prior to returning to Providence to complete his undergraduate degree. A 2013 article by OneWorldSports.com list Shammgod among the top 5 imports in CBA history.

Cotton has played a total of 18 NBA games over the course of the last two seasons. He caught on with the Utah Jazz towards the end of the season after signing two 10-day contracts and then a partially guaranteed 3-year contract with the Jazz after appearing in 15 games last season. Cotton was released by the Jazz during preseason and ended up back with the Austin Spurs — the D-League team he has played with when not in the NBA since going undrafted in 2014. Cotton got called up to the Phoenix Sun this season, but he only appeared in 3 game for the struggling Suns. Cotton did spend a month and a half with the Suns before they waived him ahead of the league deadline that would have made his contract guaranteed. He returned to the Austin Spurs on January 12th.

The 23 year old Cotton reportedly earned $228,663 during his stint with Phoenix earlier this season. That averages out to about $6,929 per minute played in 3 games for the Suns. His reported career earnings are $430,863. Details of his contract with Xinjiang haven’t been reported.
