Providence at Villanova Game Status Update: GAME POSTPONED

UPDATE: 5:48pm on January 21st:

The game has officially been postponed to Sunday at 12:30pm. A tweet was sent out by the Fox Sports PR Twitter account confirming the rumor I heard earlier.

Snow Alert: No. 16 Providence vs. No. 4 Villanova men's hoops on Sat. has been rescheduled for Sun., Jan. 24 at 12:30 PM ET on @FOX.

Here’s where we stand as of 2:30pm on January 21st:

Right now there is no update on the status of the game beyond latest from both athletic departments earlier Thursday morning with each saying the game is going to be play as scheduled. Providence has cancelled their planned pre-game brunch. Since that time, the Pennsylvania Governor has declared a state of emergency ahead of the impending storm. It should be noted that Providence is traveling to Philadelphia Thursday and the referees for the game are scheduled to travel into town on Friday. Those are good signs for this game being played, even if the snow means fan turnout will be low.

A quick analysis of each team’s off days the rest of the season show a lot of common days that don’t make sense because playing a game on one of those days would put one team in a position to play on back to back nights. However, there may be two windows of opportunity for a potential makeup. The first would be January 28th. Providence is playing Xavier at home on the 25th and traveling to Georgetown on the 30th. This would give Providence the chance to stop in Philadelphia on their way to Washington DC and play Villanova. The Wildcats would be in the midst of their first bye week of the Big East schedule and don’t have their next scheduled game until January 31st.

The other window of opportunity may be during Providence’s second bye week of the Big East schedule. Providence plays DePaul at home on January 27th and Villanova plays at Marquette that same day. Providence’s next game isn’t until March 2nd at home against Creighton and Villanova next plays on March 1st at home against DePaul. This would provide each team with one off day on both sides of the makeup. Again, as of now, the game on January 23rd is expected to be played as scheduled. These are some potential makeup scenarios that would fit, sort of, into each team’s schedule the rest of the way.
